E89 Roof problems - Damage to anchor in boot

Hi everyone,

I went to take the roof down on my Z4 this week and had an error message coming up. When investigating the boot I realised there is damage to where the parcel shelf anchors to the boot.

I have looked on Real OEM for parts but really struggling to find anything that could be the right part. I think i have the right part for the piece thats attached to the parcel shelf but cant find the bit it anchors into at all.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Below I have included some images

Hi Jon

The important part I think is showing in the 4th picture

The boot floor plastic trim has broken and the small square you can see poking through is the hall sensor that confirms the shelf is in the right place

I’ll bet that is what’s not working

Did you get any codes or specific warnings when the roof didn’t work?

Stuart

Thanks Stuart

I thought this would be the case. I havent plugged it into a machnie to get the codes.

Do you know where i can purchase a replacement part for this as i cant find it referenced anywhere.

Sure

Replacement hall sensors for e89s are v expensive (over £200 I think) but you can use the e88 hall sensor which is the same, however you have to cut and solder the existing connector onto it. They are £12 plus vat direct from bmw

2 secs I’ll grab the code

Thanks stuart,

Do you know where to purchase the plastic case above the sensor as this has cracked i assume this needs replacing as well not just the sensor.

This is interesting.

I had a similar issue many years back.
That little black square sensor was protruding out of the plastic surround.

We stripped it down, and the plastic moulding holding the sensor was not formed correctly. We trimmed it and it seated the sensor in better; so that it sat level with the underside of the plastic trim. I then ordered a new plastic trim cover.

This took a while to figure out, but to remove that, you just pull on it! (Pull it right)

51479140791 Should be the cover trim. Check the orientation. If you need the other one, it’s the same number just ending 79 2.

Here is the kicker, this had nothing to do with the roof errors. That was microswitch and wiring related.

There is no point in ordering a new cover for this without stripping that sensor housing back and making it fit better. If you don’t, it will just crack the new one.

So odd, I thought it was a one off error with a dodgy part on mine, but must have been a bad batch.

Don’t rush to order an expensive sensor. Unfortunately I have no pics of this small engineering project, but I fixed it whilst on holiday with minimal tools, so it’s pretty easy.

Thank you so much for this that is really helpfull info.

I have just removed the plate and will look at housing the sensor better.

My concern is that the latch that comes down onto it from the parcel shelf also looks like there is damage as the metal plate which i assume is to touch the sensor is fully exposed whereas on the right hand side it only petrudes a little.

There is a magnet on that part, but you are best to get a code reader and look for fault codes. It will tell you where to focus.

If you only have micro switch issues you can concentrate on those. There might be some damage to those parts, but it might not be the issue.

Very interesting HowTo story, where this subforum is intended to!
Got moved into the problem section.

Btw, your parcel shelf is completely OK, nothing is missing on the bottom.

Thats great thanks for that.

From what i can see online there might be an issue with water in the motor will have a look once it stops raining.

For future readers:
Unfortunately the above info is completely wrong regarding the named issue. It's another type of hall sensor that hardly ever fails. No substitute available, very low costs for the original part.
