E89 price advice

Hi all,

I’m currently looking at buying a 35i manual and have come across a 2009, 70k miles in blue with the cream/white interior, fairly well optioned heated seats idrive etc. Car has full service history and looks like it’s been looked after.

The one thing I am struggling on is knowing what it’s worth! I usually use auto trader etc to get an idea, but this is saying around 9,640 for a private sale which seems quite low, or is this about right?

Cheers
Steve

Has the car got rev12 injectors & the hpfp sorted? The early models had issues with these items & they’re not cheap to replace.

To be honest with you, I’m not sure! The car has full bmw service history so I would hope so, but will check with the owner. If it hadn’t what would a rough cost for both these items be c.£1k?

What AT and WBAC says on valuations of older Z4s bears no resemblance to current market rates…

I sold mine privately for over £4K more than a generic WBAC figure….

As Snartbear indicates beware that the N54 powered E89s can be very , very expensive to fix and there are several parts that will go wrong..it’s just a matter of time…

A quick google search
Index 12 injectors £360 each £2160 for all 6
HPFP £930
And that’s with labour for fitting
There’s also the electric water pump that could fail at any moment at that age and mileage plus also the numerous leaking oil seals and gaskets to contend with.
These can be expensive cars to run, but great cars to drive :driving:
And full BMW service history doesn’t mean any of these items have been addressed.

Thanks that’s helpful!

Yes I was more meaning someone willing to pay for all BMW services is probably more likely to have paid for the additional work aswell, but all hypothetical of course!

I think I’ll continue to look and try and wait for a newer lower mileage example, if the issues haven’t been addressed already

I’m not meaning to put you off the car, mines on 73k and not had any major issues in the 3 years I’ve had it, recently changed the rocker cover gasket which had just started to weep and noticed I had the index 12 injectors fitted, currently have the water pump and thermostat sat at the back of my garage waiting to be fitted, no issue just preventative maintenance, go and have a look at the 35i, it might just be right for you.

Lower mileage is no predictor of 35i reliability…age is the better predictor ..by around 2015 most of the issue that BMW was going to fix were ie HPFP and index 12 injectors..

That just leaves adaptive dampers, turbo waste gates, coils as the likely items on a 35i

At 50k miles mine had shot dampers, defective coils and a botched injector update but it is a 2011 MY 35is..

Horses for courses tho.

All performance cars cost money to run. Still relatively cheap motoring compared to slightly more exotic cars simply because they aren't that expensive to buy. Its worth having a pre purchase inspection before buying

Agree with this, mine is a 2014 on 55k miles, HPFP and injectors are AFAIK still original, but adaptive dampers had some issues 15/20k miles ago and some were replaced. I might have a look next week and see which injectors I have...

I'd be nervous about buying an older 35i/35is unless the injectors and HPFP were proven to have been changed and updated. All you can do is ask the question and, if he doesn't know or they definitely haven't been done, factor that into the price you're willing to pay.

As Tom says above, not huge amounts of money given the performance of the engine.

Interesting read and having previously owned a Z4MC I have considered getting in to a higher performance E89 but clearly I need to tread carefully based on some of the issues that have been highlighted with the N54 engine.

It seems like the injectors, fuel pump, rocker cover, dampers and turbo waste gates are all problem areas - maybe I should just stick with the N52 but the promise of more power is always hard to resist

Rocker covers, water pumps, oil filter gaskets are common items to both N52 and N54 engines..it could be argued that the extra heat of the N54 cooks some of these items faster.

Distilling down the N54 engines / chassis it would appear for E89s that the order is…

Adaptive dampers, coils, injectors, waste gates, turbos and finally HPFP if you are really unlucky…I had the first three…so far..at 50k
