E89 Front Shock Absorbers

Would shocks be included and fixed with a warranty or are they classed the same as tyres and brakes?

Depends on warranty but BMW warranty comp covers them up to 100k miles.

Cheaper from Soper perhaps?

Normally a big fan of Soper but still waiting for them to call back despite multiple attempts to get a price from them.

Spoke to Sytner again today they were very helpful to be fair car is booked in for next Thursday. Just biting the bullet and getting it all sorted putting it down as one of those things. Has made me realise having a warranty is the way forward and not just keeping a pot of money for maintenance and repairs to one side. Actually having both is the way forward !

Warranty is a complete must on these cars. Nothing is cheap on the Z4.

The warranty on mine has saved me thousands, probably over 10k by now. Just had an adaptive damper replaced which is another £450+Labour (£650?) on the total.

Sorry to drag this thread up again and remind you of the sad times philip27, but just got mine back from a big service to be told one of my front shocks has a big leak too. 800 to replace the one so I'm considering swapping them all for non adaptive system considering I'm at 72k miles and the others will no doubt go soon too.

Has anyone else attempted this and can shed some light on the process and is the end result a better ride anyway?

Just picked up mine 2010 IS with 111tkm/70k miles. New parts:
- front shocks
- all springs to Eibach
- guide supports
- spring pads
- protection tubes
- etc.

Total cost 2200 EUR / 1850 GBP

I've just bought some Bilstein B6 fronts for my non adaptive 23i.
£273 for the pair and will fit them myself asap.
Going over road humps there's a sound like a child stamping in mud.

I replaced the rears some time ago the originals seemed a bit rubbish.

If you have an IS then you had adaptive suspension (EDC), so is that now disabled with an emulator? Like you get with the KW kits?

And what's the ride like now comparatively?

I bought oem shocks, so EDC working as it used to. Springs has nothing to do with EDC.

Just drove few miles to home yesterday as it was raining. Going for little testing today.

Ride feels bit smoother then it used to. I use Sport or Sport+ a lot and then you'll notice the difference. I like it

I wasn't able to find any information on how to bypass the system. Just ended up going for like for like replacement. Sytner have been great in helping sort the car. Putting aside the cost I'm glad I just took it there in the end to get sorted.

For anyone interested I stumbled upon this today http://www.lkperformance.co.uk/car-parts/product/kw/variant-1-coilovers?vehicle_model_id=1178&part_id=51622 it may be of interest for those that want to go the aftermarket route.

Yeh that's the KW Variant 1 with the EDC disabling emulators. Other options are KW Variant 3 for about £2500 which have manual adjustable height and damping + EDC disablers, or the Bilstein/Eibach kits with the same.

I'm still weighing up which option to take. Too many options! :headbang:

I fitted my Bilsteins to my 23i, non adaptive.
The ride is smoother and less jolty than the originals, which would shake the dash and windshield on parts of the road where tarmac has lifted nearly an inch, but the Council can't be bothered to repair :x

Anyone wanting to fit themselves, you can just about pull the shock and spring out having removed the wheel arch liner.
A car scissor jack under the shock will push it out, once the clamp bolt is removed.
And a lot easier if the calliper and disc removed.
Will need spring compressor to refit springs. (£10 off Ebay).

I started up the warranty again on mine recently as its knocking on now and want the peace of mind, esp at £1600 for new shocks!

I didn't think they allowed a restart of the insured warranty after it had lapsed ?

Surprised me too but they did. Slight increase in premium by £6 a month for first year.

They increase the policy cost by age. After 6yrs it goes up by about £6 so that is probably the reason for the increase.
