E89 Battery Question- confused what size

Hi all- looking to change the battery on my E89 2012 2.0 m-sport manual and getting confused with what size it needs - its got stop start so I know it needs the AGM type. Haven't got any means of registering it myself so will have to get it fitted by someone who knows what their doing - checked ECP and it says i need 096 AGM -( the spec seems to match with the original BMW battery thats fitted that is made by exide) - cost of the replacement exide battery is circa £170 delivered with discount but then need fitting. Checked AA and RAC websites and they say it needs a larger battery 115AGM and are charging in the region of £250 fitted. Checked tanya batteries and can get the same exide battery for £120 delivered with fitting at a local garage for £15 through their website ! Anyone recently fitted a new battery to their 2.0 e89 and what size did you fit - anyone used tanya batteries as it seems very cheap compared to other websites/garages. Many thanks in advance G

Having just got this wrong this is the correct battery for you from Tayna is F21 Varta Start-Stop Plus AGM Car Battery 12V 80Ah (580901080)

Do not go bigger than this as it will not fit into the clamp mechanism and will end up sitting slightly on the piss with only the top restraining bar holding it in place and not ghe bottom clamp..

£158 inc vat delivered

An Exide AGM of the same capacity I’m sure would be ok..

I got the 95 ah recommended by Tayna and had the above problem..

I don’t know if it’s different on later cars but a AGM 096 is what I fitted on my 2009. Purchased from Tayna via eBay. Fitted perfectly.

I also have a 2009 E89 S Drive 3.0i but I guess as yours no stop start system does this affect the battery choice or is it not important.

Been beaten to death, but all E89s need AGM as they have regenerative braking, start stop nominally affects capacity 80ah vs 70ah so the AGM096 is not suitable for start stop versions but OK for all other E89s..

Of course it wil work with 70ah and the world will not end but the 80ah is best..

Correct. My car doesn’t have stop start and the original BMW battery was 70AH but I went for AGM. There is no problem fitting a stop start battery to a non stop start car according to Varta. https://batteryworld.varta-automotive.com/en-gb/advantages-agm

Cheers all - gonna go for the 80 ah Exide AGM from Tanya only a-bit more than the 70aH anyway and get it fitted at one of the tanya fitting partners - not gonna mention the topic of registering the battery though :D

Quite so..if you change the battery it needs to be registered, if you change the capacity it neeeds that factor altering..any garage with the correct tools can do it in 2 mins..

I wanted the servotronic upgrade on my car. Never specified on my 2009 23i. The software was going to be £200. But they said i needed to up rate my battery to 80ah from 70ah and the alternator.
I'm assuming later cars after say 2012 had servotronic as standard. So are they using the 70ah battery?

My late 2009 is fitted with Servotronic and came with a 70AH battery. In the 14 months or so I have owned the car I’ve not had any problems with the battery or with anything else for that matter. Long may it continue! 🙂

Not directly relevant to this thread, but would I be right in thinking AGM batteries have come down a bit in price?

When I needed one for my 123d (with stop/start) an 80ah one cost £220 in 2012, before coding! :?

That's interesting, so as i thought i was just fobbed off by the dealer.
Probably didn't want to go messing with something they knew nothing about.

I have the original BMW price list and Brochure for the launch of the E89 dated Valid From March 2009 .In both it states for Z4 2.3i 3.0i and 3.5i " Electronic Power steering (EPS) with servotronic " is standard equipment so either the BMW litterature is incorrect or your dealer has his wires crossed.

I checked one of those vin number and specification sites on the internet, my car is without the servotronic option which gives more low speed steering assistance, not to be confused with the normal electronic steering. I checked my friends car with it, the steering is very light when stationary, mine is heavy. I went to the dealer to ask for the software upgrade and was told i needed to uprate to 80ah battery and uprated alternator. That why i questioned earlier battery sizing.
Anyone buying an early car could well to check if the car comes with the option. Just nice to have.
This from realoem:

Software with a short time pass for installation by dealer.

I haven’t a clue if Servotronic was standard equipment. Below are the details taken from my VIN.

I also checked the VIN No spec of mine and it states servotronic included. Strange as its listed in there literature that its standard for the 23i that its not on yours ?

I just checked my vin. It states S216A Hydro Steeringservotronic.
I have the original window sticker which lists Servotronic as included
and interestingly Stronger electricity supply as included
Extras include heated seats and Navigation and BMW assist w/ BT

Listed under Standard Features:
blah
blah blah
Vehicle-speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering

This is a base model 2010 3.0 car if that helps.

I think it became standard across all models in 2010 according to real oem..
