Another member just came up with an idea to compare the old and new from an owner's point of view. So here goes. I've seen quite a lot of negativity online about the new car so go easy on me!!
My E89 was a 2017 '66 2.0i MSport Auto. Brilliant car but flawed in my humble opinion. My new G29 is a 2.0i Sport with Comfort Pack and 19" optional alloys.
The biggest difference from my point of view, that I noticed immediately, is that I can get comfortable in the G29. I can adjust the seat far more and recline it more which is something I couldn't do in the E89. You can as they say, 'feel the width' on the new car which for me makes the difference too.
Driving is in another league. In terms of refinement and comfort, the new car is quite frankly astonishing. I thought a soft top would noisier and have more rattles, but this couldn't be further from reality. It is so quiet and composed. The ride in comfort setting is firm but pliant and in sport, it can be adjusted in various different ways which I've yet to try.
Power and performance is better too. The motor seems to have been tweaked and the so have the gear shift patterns which seems more responsive and more urgent than before. The power delivery is extremely smooth too.
In terms of looks and fit and finish, I loved my E89, but the interior of the G29 is far more opulent. The seats are far more comfortable and the instrumentation and standard equipment fit is very generous. One down side is that I do have an issue regarding the Sat Nav at this point - in that it keeps rebooting, but the car is booked in at Sytner's on Friday and will hopefully get sorted.
Exterior looks are certainly a talking point. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say, but to me the car looks way better in the flesh and whilst to me, the E89 looked great from most angles, it didn't look quite right head on. Just my opinion. But again IMHO, the new car looks fantastic from every angle, roof up or down. The new lights are surprisingly BMW like - just placed on top of each other - and I've gone for the grille picked out in silver as opposed to black which I feel makes it look classier.
It's early days with the new car but my initial impressions are very pleasing. If you like seat of the pants motoring, then it may not be for you, but if you want a refined car with impeccable responsiveness and handling, then the G29 really is light years ahead. A much better proposition for touring too with the bigger boot even with the roof down.
Had quite a deal on the car too!
I'll update this as things progress, but to me, the new G29 is fabulous. Thought I'd miss the E89, and in some ways I do - but not too much it has to be said!
