E89 and G29 comparison from my point of view

Another member just came up with an idea to compare the old and new from an owner's point of view. So here goes. I've seen quite a lot of negativity online about the new car so go easy on me!!

My E89 was a 2017 '66 2.0i MSport Auto. Brilliant car but flawed in my humble opinion. My new G29 is a 2.0i Sport with Comfort Pack and 19" optional alloys.

The biggest difference from my point of view, that I noticed immediately, is that I can get comfortable in the G29. I can adjust the seat far more and recline it more which is something I couldn't do in the E89. You can as they say, 'feel the width' on the new car which for me makes the difference too.

Driving is in another league. In terms of refinement and comfort, the new car is quite frankly astonishing. I thought a soft top would noisier and have more rattles, but this couldn't be further from reality. It is so quiet and composed. The ride in comfort setting is firm but pliant and in sport, it can be adjusted in various different ways which I've yet to try.

Power and performance is better too. The motor seems to have been tweaked and the so have the gear shift patterns which seems more responsive and more urgent than before. The power delivery is extremely smooth too.

In terms of looks and fit and finish, I loved my E89, but the interior of the G29 is far more opulent. The seats are far more comfortable and the instrumentation and standard equipment fit is very generous. One down side is that I do have an issue regarding the Sat Nav at this point - in that it keeps rebooting, but the car is booked in at Sytner's on Friday and will hopefully get sorted.

Exterior looks are certainly a talking point. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say, but to me the car looks way better in the flesh and whilst to me, the E89 looked great from most angles, it didn't look quite right head on. Just my opinion. But again IMHO, the new car looks fantastic from every angle, roof up or down. The new lights are surprisingly BMW like - just placed on top of each other - and I've gone for the grille picked out in silver as opposed to black which I feel makes it look classier.

It's early days with the new car but my initial impressions are very pleasing. If you like seat of the pants motoring, then it may not be for you, but if you want a refined car with impeccable responsiveness and handling, then the G29 really is light years ahead. A much better proposition for touring too with the bigger boot even with the roof down.

Had quite a deal on the car too!

I'll update this as things progress, but to me, the new G29 is fabulous. Thought I'd miss the E89, and in some ways I do - but not too much it has to be said!

Nice review and nice new Zed

Being very pedantic your E89 couldn’t have been a 2017 surely?

The only thing I can’t go with you on is the seat adjustment on the new car, the seat base squab doesn’t raise like the sport seats do on the E89, it’s an area that gets a big thumbs down personally as I like the base squab listed back.

Hope you enjoy the car and the forum.

Ahh each to their own on that!!! Lol!! It was a 2017 registration. It was built in July 2016 but had been sitting about and was the last ever new e89 registered by Sytner Coventry.

Great comparison, and congratulations on being the 1st G29 owner I've seen a post from.

It sounds like you are really enjoying it as well.

I like my Z4 to be more "seat of the pants" so I'll stick with my E86 - for now anyway. I've got a 3 Series daily for when I want refined - mind you it looks like you have one of those too!

That’s a lovely looking Z, the sport looks lovely and those alloys are gorgeous, probably my favourite of all. Can you get the adaptive suspension on the sport?

Congratulations on your new car and thanks for an honest review.

I do agree though, each to their own, you state
'E89 looked great from most angles, it didn't look quite right head on. Just my opinion. But again IMHO, the new car looks fantastic from every angle, roof up or down.'
but I'd have to say the front end of the G29 is it's worst angle. I love the rear and the interior looks good too (still not sure about the roof). I just don't know if I'd want to spend so much on a version with all the bells and whistles or just get a used Porsche Cayman S.

Cheers!! Not sure whether you can specify adaptive suspension on the 2.0i though

Sorry I thought yours had it when you stated that

That'll spark some debate, however there won't be many who have owned both so your comparison feedback is as rare as it is informative
Have to say it looks good in white

I was going to ask how long you had your E89 but you kinda answered that by saying it was registered in 2017. So roughly 2 years.
I wonder how long you will own this one?
The other thing that people will need to remember is that a new model should feel better than the older model being in this case the design and technology is over 10 years old.
The pics that are now emerging make the car look a lot better than any of the pics before launch.
Don't like the whole front end, bumper, grills or bonnet.

NewZdriver; did you order this car a while ago or did you get it from dealer stock?
Nice looking car

Have to agree I think its looks simply stunning and when I test drove the G29 2.0 M sport , I was blown away

. Cheers! It really is amazing! The complete driving experience is incredible. When I first saw pictures of the new Z4 I, like others was a bit sceptical but it’s beautiful in the flesh!

Yes sir, I certainly will have an enormous grin on my face. Dealer tells me it might be ready for collection next weekend.
Another UK guy on the forum (j400uk) collects his M40i tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing his photos.
