One of our Zedshed Cymru members was getting an horrendous noise coming from the engine bay listened with a stethoscope and it seemed to be coming from the aircon compressor we took the belt off and ran it and the noise was gone. Searched the web for details and found details of bypassing the compressor using a shorter belt. Its a 2.3 car and only has the idler tensioner, crank pully and alternator to drive without the compressor. By all accounts a 6PK938 belt and a slightly larger pully on the tensioner will give sufficient tension on the belt to achieve the bypass. The larger idler pully on the tensioner is apparently Febi 45875.
BMW wat at least 1k for replacement compressor plus fitting etc. Independent is asking £500 for aftermarket unit plus fitting and re gassing.
Decision by owner yet to be made.
Anyone had experience of a bypass on a 2.3?
