E89 after numerous E85’s...

I’ve taken a deposit on my Current E85 Si, which goes on Tuesday... but the Z4M Roadster I was going to replace it with has fallen through :(

This would have been a cracking deal, which I won’t be able to replicate, so an M is off the table for the time being.

I’m thinking about trying an E89, and was interested in views from those who have moved from 3.0si E85’s to E89’s

I’d be looking at either a 3.0 manual, or the 4 pot turbo and probably looking at between £8k & £9k, which looks achievable even in the currently crazy car market!

Any views welcome

Moved from a 3.0si to a 23i..absolutely no regrets even with the smaller engine, a lot more refined roof up and down, nicer cabin, not quite the go kart the e85 is but for me personally thats no bad thing, I think a lot will depend on how you use it, if you do want a more sports car experience you'd not trump the z4m but if you want a nice looking 2 seater drop top thats a bit more gt, a bit more relaxed all round but can still reward a committed driver then the e89 is a fantastic car, I know some have gone back to e85s but for me personally I couldn't do it

I also went from a 3.0si to a (quick) succession of e89’s, a 30i followed by a 20i.
Both engines have their strong points, combined with the car being a slightly better all rounder than the e85 with an interior which is a nicer place to be.
I’ve had my present car for almost 3 years now & not been tempted to go back.

Thanks gents,

I’ve been a bit too focussed on trying to get into the lowest mileage E85 Si I can, I think. I’m disappointed the M has fallen through, but I think I wanted it more ‘as an object’ than to drive harder than my Si

I do enjoy driving my current car, but it’s not a relaxing car for distances that’s for sure... but it is raw, and reasonably quick. I guess I’m thinking about a compromise between speed and comfort now. I do appreciate and understand that the E89 isn’t the last word in chassis development... but I wouldn’t be tracking it

If you're thinking of a compromise you're looking at the right car, its not even that much of a compromise..it does almost everything better than an e85, save cracking on at full tilt and even then its only marginally behind but it makes up for it everywhere else..get out and test drive one, you'll soon know if its not for you, I held off for a few years, I thought the si was a nicer looking car and from many angles it is but the e89 is still a looker (except from behind, the back end is its least attractive angle) both great cars in different ways but the e89 edges it for me personally

Sorry to hear your MR purchase has fallen through, but if you don't find your 3.0Si relaxing for distances it's possible you might not have gelled with an MR.

Admittedly I've only had E86s, but my MC is far more raw than my 3.0Sis were! Which is probably why I'm loving it.

I'm not sure if I'd be quite as enamoured with it as a daily, but I've got a 3 Series for the dull drives.

As the current owner of one of each I'd say you probably need to try one. Not safe/easy to do at the moment though I guess. The e85 is definitely more raw the e89 but it has better steering and feels lighter on its toes with far less roll from the factory. These things can be greatly improved on the e89 with a few choice mods and it's definitely the more spacious and better equipped cabin and quite a decent sports car with a few tweaks . All in all the e89 is a better all rounder and the one to take on a longer journey, altjough boot space can be an issue with the roof down. At the moment for me if I had to sell one it would be the e85 as I'm tending to pick up the keys for the e89 over it these days. Which isn't something I thought I'd ever say but it's grown me the e89 and I think I'm getting old!😁
