E89 20i or 18i with right spec.2014-2016

If you want to delve into 'common problems' with any engine, you will find some, somewhere, if you look hard enough.

I don't know how many N20 engines BMW made before the cam chain update, but it must be in the multi-millions. They are in every 2L petrol engine from around 2010 until the B48 was released (2016 ish?).

BMW never recalled them, as not enough failed, or had the likelihood of failing early. In the olden days a cambelt was changed at around 60k miles as a routine part of maintenance. If the camchain and guides need to be changed on an N20 at around 70k miles, just in case, then that seems fair.

If 5% fail at some point (I don't know the numbers), then 95% don't. 20:1. I would take those odds! Seems they don't tend to just 'fail' anyway, not like a cambelt would and lunch your engine (potentially). They give a warning long before.
People buy the N54 happily and love it. yet it is one of the most unreliable engines BMW have built; apart from pretty much any modern S engine, all of their V8 twin turbos, etc, etc.
