So, having already started to discuss this on the "welcome" thread, I figured I should do a proper wanted post.

I am looking for a later model E89. In my fantasy world that is a lovely 35i with history and one caring enthusiast owner!

In reality I imagine it is a 2.0i (or 28i). Manual or auto, I don't mind. Colour? I am a guy, so that is not a significant factor!
History and a lower number of previous owners is more important than low mileage.

Heated seats and the better quality sound system are important.

Budget is up to £10k. This will be a 3rd/weekend car so I will wait for the right one.

What say the collective?

Any engine, any gearbox, any colour.

Low owners, good history, heated seats, upgrade sound.

I would suggest a morning on autotrader to narrow things down - when you are looking things will become apparent (use the filters) & you can focus more.

I am torn between the undeniably lovely 3.0 and the more responsive 2.0 turbo (as others have said, doesn't matter whether 18,20 or 28i as a remap sorts).

Manual or auto I don't mind.

Colour - other than white - i have no preference.

Mileage. I always believe history and owners are more important.
An enthusiast owned car with 100k is a better call than a serviced car with 60k in my experience.

Owners. Having owned convertibles before I know they usually have more owners. That said, nothing too crazy.

Sound system? One area where I am picky. The BMW business system is rubbish in my experience. Not sure what the others are like and which is best (advice will be appreciated 🙏).

Heated seats is a necessity according to the wife! 🫡

I have to say, the cars I have looked at so far appear overpriced. I suspect this is down to the time of year and prices may fall in the next few months?

So, would the collective wisdom be to go with a slightly older 3.0 over a newer 2.0?

FWIW a fair chunk of AT sellers are in fantasy land..there’s a 2:1 spread on pricing for essentially identical items.

There were 3 audio systems available on UK E89s…base 6 speaker and the 676 11 speaker and 677 14 speaker systems…audio preferences are very personal..to me none were that brilliant ..others would argue differently…an audio upgrade is a relatively easy but can still end up expensive option.

These days I’d now go either for the 30i or a later post April 2015 20i…the earlier ones are blessed with the poorer cam chain sub system..

The auto box on the 20i is superb..on the 30i either auto or manual is an option..imho

Enjoy your search..

Colour - other than white - i have no preference.
I wouldn't rule out white unless it physically repels you. It really accentuates the swage lines of the E89 and shows the beautiful design of the shape off extremely well.
Your choice, obviously. :)

I've always though a straight 6 engine was one of the unique features of Z4s compared to its rivals, so I'd be looking for a 30i.

The N52 engine in the 30i is fantastic (I like them so much I'm on my 4th, albeit in a 3 Series) and they seem pretty bulletproof although there don't seem to be too many 30i Z4s around.

But some people prefer the mid-range shove a turbo can give so maybe it depends what you prefer. Ideally it might be best to try to test both and see which you prefer.

Anyway good luck finding the right Z4.

Thanks for the replies ☺️
Ok, maybe white is not so bad. But the wife looked at a few with me and decreed no red leather interior, which seems to rule out half of the Z4's out there! 🙄

Honestly, the pricing on many of the cars out there really is in fantasy land as B21 says.

Good things come to those who wait they say.....
