E86: Thinking of selling

Hi All

I am considering selling my Coupe, fantastic car though it is I simply do not get out in it as much as I used to and the car needs to be in the hands of someone who is going to use it.

Its a low mileage '08 plate on silver with most of the toys except cruise and the upgraded steering wheel.

So my question is, where are we best selling these cars. They are great but the market is pretty niche with prices that vary massively.

Someone has recommended Car and Classic for their auction service, it looks decent but I wanted to check on views.

Keen to avoid tyre kicking chancers, I spent a year choosing this car when I bought it and it is just going through a full detail (its never looked so good!), so I will be treating new buyers with suspicion until I know they will be nice to my car :D

Thoughts and advise welcome.

The market is pretty much bottomed out at the moment. So the auction prices will reflect this.
Lots of these cars have been up for high prices and not selling.
Cars are selling which are priced correctly according to the market at the moment.
If you are a realist you will sell. If not you will be still staring at in 3/4 months time.
Just look at the sale section on here. Tells you all you need to know

In order of likelihood of encountering tyre-kicking chancers (least likely to most likely):

Owners' forums like this one
Carandclassic
Pistonheads
Auto Trader
eBay
Facebook groups
Facebook Marketplace
Gumtree

Autotrader. I didn’t get any traction offering my coupe on here, but sold it quickly for a good price on A/T. The advert felt expensive at c£80, but was worth it.

When I'm looking for a car AutoTrader is always the first place I look. I do check through eBay, Gumtree and Pistonheads, but AutoTrader is the best and easiest site to use.

I agree with J3nks89 above. If you price a car well it will sell quickly. There are buyers out there, but more are only prepared to pay sensible money.

The market is getting busier with dreamers expecting too much money for their car. They are seeing a few highly priced cars for sale and this influences the valuation.

Thanks guys. I have always done Autotrader in the past too, just liked the sound of C&C as it seems more targeted.

I might test the water with Autotrader then dip into an auction if I don't get any traction -- C&C allow free ads, so I can list there too. There are some daft prices out there, 13-14k!, so hopefully a low mileage model in great condition will attract some serious buyers if I have a sensible price.

I will pop some details in the forum in case anyone is interested once I get around to listing it.

Totally agree.
There are some very deluded people around this year. Having the same conversation regarding Z3s somewhere else. The prices are generally stupid but NOTHING is selling (because they are nearly ALL overpriced). Many cars have been for sale for nearly three years! I think Covid has addled a lot of people's brains TBH. :?

In the past 4 months I've sold 4 Zeds.

My E86 sold on eBay as a classified add with offers and went to the first person who turned up to view.

My M44 Z3 went exactly the same way as the E86 and again to the first buyer who came to view.

My E89 was initially advertised on here and the Zroadster forum before being listed as a 7 day auction on eBay. Having still not sold it ended up going to a forum member who is on both groups but contacted me via Zroadster.

My M43 Z3 was advertised on Zroadster but after no interest I put it on eBay as a 7 day auction and it sold for considerably more than it had been advertised on the forum.

In terms of buying I check both forums, the dedicated Facebook groups, Autotrader and eBay - all of the cars mentioned above we bought from dedicated Facebook groups.

Just curious, why buying and selling so many? I tend to want to bond with the car and have it many years and make it my own.

I haven't sold many cars in the last decade, but I sold both my previous E86s on here. No issues either time, both buyers knew what they wanted so no test pilot, tyre kicker or low-ball offer issues.

Given that it's specific to Z4s and is free I'd start here. Pistonheads is free too if you've been on there 10 years.

Sold my 7 year old 1 Series in 2014 on Autotrader, and a cheapy runaround Mazda 323 on Gumtree later that year with no problems but probably not a good idea for an E86!

Just be sure you are ready to sell though. Someone viewed my first E86 on a Sunday, so I took it for a possible last drive on the Monday and realised what I'd be missing, then sure enough he rang me Monday evening to put a deposit on it. 3 days later I put a deposit on my next one.
