E86 tailgate strut question.

When opening the tailgate on an E86 should it lift and open fully itself? I've not had mine long and have noticed that the struts will support the tailgate open at all levels but I have to actually push it open!

i don't think mine does, it tends to just stay where i open it to, if i open with a slight force it will open fully

the tail gate can show signs of rust, check yours when you open it, check on the inside, down the sides and at across the bottom

Same here, it doesn't open fully by itself with the strut, requires a helping hand. Although it opens a lot more freely with the rear blind retracted.

Mine behaves like yours Taz but I might be an idiot. Is it designed to be opened fully with the load cover attached. This seems to make a difference to how easily it opens! Either way it makes me wonder what the point in the remote boot release is given the that you need to use the badge/handle to lift it first anyway!

Thanks for the tip about the rust

Taz- what are we looking for here? Is it obvious rust ( bubbling) or some early signs??

Advice appreciated
