E86 leaking oil

Hi! I purchased a 2008 Z4 3.0si coupe last year and realized that the valve cover/oil filter housing gasket is leaking oil. I drive it occasionally but now I’m finally getting a low oil add 1L message on my dash.

Would a standard jug Mobil 1 5w-30 bought from autozone be sufficient in topping off the oil? I’ve read around and everyone’s saying to use LL-01 but I don’t see it on the back of the jug.

Are you are located in the United States ? The oil you show isn't bad, but the oils you want will be labelled "European Car Formula" and "A3/B4". As far as I know, all oils labelled A3/B4 in the US will be synthetics. You can get those oils in 5W-30 and 5W-40 weights, and one of those should keep your engine running well in most climates.

Do you know what oil is in the car now ? If not, and if you've had the car a year, I'd urge you to do a complete oil change. It'll cost you about $45 for 7 quarts of oil at WalMart. A MANN or Hengst oil filter will come with the necessary O-ring and a new washer for the oil pan plug, for about $8 to $11. Are you doing your own maintenance, or do you have an mechanic/shop ? If you are planning DYI, this is a great forum!

If you have a leaking OFHG (oil filter housing gasket), you will want to fix it as soon as you can. Search on BMW N52 OFHG.
