E86 3.0si

So since my post last week with a fairly broad scope I’ve spent a week reacquainting myself in Zed land and have come to the conclusion it’s likely I want to get back in an E86! So have updated this post with a new brief!

I am looking for an E86, preferably sub 80k mileage but could do more with good service history. Blacks and greys preferred with red or black leather. Budget around £10k.

Ideally would be manual with M Sport, FSH, PDC, heated seats, Xenons, decent stereo, CSLs or similar.... not all essential.

I am keeping my eye on AT and eBay where there are quite a few higher milers on offer, but would prefer a forum car if possible.

So.... if anyone is thinking of selling drop me a PM! Based in Reading but will to travel subject to sensible COVID approach.

Thanks in advance.

Mine is available (E89 3.0) in theory - not advertised and no plans to until a replacement is here (long boring story, don't ask!)

Ticks some of your boxes, fails on others including 104k mileage, but is higher than average spec.

Full story here:

Couple of things will be removed prior to sale (smart top, gear shifter, sill covers).

£8.5k.

Good luck with your search which will be great fun - always satisfying chasing something specific with the benefit of research and model knowledge, rather than just landing on a random car how many people do!

Thanks for response Timmy. As you say not quite matching the brief but one to consider, great thread and project you done with it!

Thankyou!

Yes it's been a very enjoyable thing to own and work on this car. Certainly helped with the crazy year we've all just had (and continue to have)

Does anyone know this car or any history on it?

Not necessarily looking for an ///M given my budget (or desire to be sensible) but may consider one at this price and with what looks like a strong service history!

This is where I usually go wrong though, I think I started out looking for a 30i last time and ended up with a 35is! :D

I don't know anything about it, but when I first saw the advert I thought it looked like a bit of a bargain for a 2 owner car.

My only concern would be whether the crank rod bearing shells have been replaced. If not I'd buy it and budget £1,000 to get them done by a good BMW Indy. Ross at RBMHampshire (bowser134 on here) did mine last year.

But if you buy it you might not want to sell it.

Ha!! Thanks. I’ve not looked into the ///Ms before other than always viewing them as a guilty pleasure than I’ve not had the bottle to go for, but assume crank rod bearing shafts are a key point. I’ll have a search on here for things to look out for but any advice welcomed! Are higher milers a serious concern or does a good history stand them up well?

The bearing shells are a known potential issue, especially if the car is driven hard before the oil is right up to temperature because 10W/60 oil is pretty thick when it's cold! It may be less of a problem with a 2 owner car if they looked after it - mine had 7 previous owners so the odds of an inconsiderate one were quite high, especially as BMW UK was the first.

Here is what my old ones looked like after 77K miles.

I don't believe higher miles are necessarily a problem so long as they are properly looked after, especially with the Inspection 1 and 2 services. mmm-five on here has one on 160K!

But some reading on the M specific pages would be time well spent.

If you drive one just be prepared to want one! I knew after I first tried one it was just a matter of time until I found the right one.

Thanks Tidy.... I’m onto the reading, this usually doesn’t end well!

I think that example may be too high for me but it has got me looking into the ///Ms, I’ll probably calm down by the morning!
