E86 3.0si stuttering acceleration

Hi All,

The roadster went and after a few lost months, found myself with an E86 (3.0 N52) on the driveway. All has been well with it except a stuttering under heavy acceleration. I researched on here and replaced the battery, but it didn't make any difference.

One Sunday I noticed that while it stuttered when accelerating on the outward leg of the journey, it didn't on the way back. Since then, I've found that if it happens, a quick stop at the side of the road for an off and on, and all is well.

While it's not the gravest issue, can anybody narrow down the cause and why the IT department's favourite trick works?

Cheers,

Chris

What mileage are you on Chris, have you any history to reference the last spark plug change and if the coil packs have ever been replaced?
I had a similar issue on 75k, new battery made no difference but was needed anyway, I replaced all the plugs and coil packs and all was well again, much improved infact. I saw a thread on here where someone on here said replace the ones that need replacing, fair enough but if they are all original coils then on a coupe they are at least 15 years old.
If you do it yourself it's easy and not a that expensive if you get the parts from Autodoc.

Hi Dark,

Just turned 74k. It has got a full-service history, but I haven't leafed through all the docs just yet to see when the last spark plug change was. It's all be done at the main dealer, so you will be right that coil packs will be originals.

First oil change next week, so will add coil pack change and spark plugs to the list!

Cheers!

Have you scanned the car ?
I had an acceleration problem which was easily diagnosed as a Vanos solenoid issue.
