Hi all

Recently bought a bit of a dog of a BMW Z4 for my other half for the summer as a bit of a project whilst lock down has been going on.

The driver's window has dropped about 3.5cm from the top. Have removed the door card and undone the bolt holding the window in and pulled the glass up to its max height but still not enough!! The window drops then the door opened so that still works. Am I missing something? Tried the re programming method but not that either.

Any help would be massively appreciated

I believe the windows detect their end points by 'feeling' the resistance as the window gets to the top or bottom of its travel (probably by measuring the current draw of the motor). Is there possibly some dirt in the window tracks that is presenting enough resistance for the window to think it is at the top of its travel?
You could try helping the window up during the window reset procedure to see if it will run past the current place that it stops.

The window tracks can be cleaned and lubricated with something silicone based. Some people even use furniture polish but a dedicated lubricant is probably better. Just avoid getting it on the glass, its a pain to clean off.

I would suggest your regulator is knackered. You’ll need a repair kit from eBay for under £20 or replace the entire regulator for about £150.

Common issue I’m afraid.

So tonight as well as fix the leaking vaccum pump I tried pulling the window up whilst the window was going up and made no difference so thinking of going for a full regulator.

So lastnight I stripped the window reg out and was going to strip it down to do the rebuild and I cam across some frayed wire. Hopping a rebuild will solve the issue but apparently not, someone has already been in and done one before and bonded the cover that usually held together with rivets and now has gone brittle so the cover for the reel just broke apart 🤦🏼‍♂️
