E85 Wiper motor issue

Hi,

Was driving on the motorway yesterday and my drivers side wiper blasted off and got stuck by the mirror. When I checked it the motor had no tension at all and the wiper moves freely by hand.
I guess my motor is gone? and I need a new one? (is it e85 specific? or any other BMW motor will fit? )
Thanks!
D

If it's just the passenger wiper flopping around it sounds more like the linkage mechanism & not the motor.
You can take the plastic cover off to have a look for anything obvious?

Hi if it is the motor, pm me as I have one. If it is the plastic ball joint ( a common fault ) wearing out then some gave attempted a repair by putting a small bolt through the arm, I didn't and as bmw don't do a parts replacement I had to shell out for. Complete motor assembly :headbang: best of luck.

Ah..... what is the best fix for that??? Can i silicone it back in and put a cable tie around (through that little hole)??? Any other solutions?

That's scrap then, without a bit of engineering. I'd get a replacement mechanism.

If you struggle I have a complete unit that I might sell, but see if you can get one from a breakers.

BTW - that's the dirtiest I've ever seen a bulkhead. Clean that all out or you have blocked drains and a wet interior

;/ bit of engineering as in what? :)

How much is a complete unit?

Bulkhead was even worse, covered in small leaves etc ... I will make it spotless once I'm done

:headbang:

hmhmhm :) sounds exactly the same.... anyone tried this?

OK - so do you still have the pivot that was fitted into the arm? If so it needs fitting back in and welding. The fact you mentioned silicone and zip ties made me suspect you weren't minded to engineer a solution, but I'm sure you could drill out the arm and create a solution using a suitable bolt, washers and nuts.

The fix you reference would work fine if you can repair the pivot and the bush is a little too loose. Downside though it that the wipers will have some slop in them and waggle up and down the screen more than normal

I don't know how much a new unit is, but from BMW I'd say north of £300 and from a breakers £100.
You let me know what a complete set of linkages is worth to you and I may let mine go.

silicone was a bit overkill, but cable tie did work... and as a worst case scenario will work for me for the next few days

The suggestion I found earlier does make sense and I would like to try it, but cant remove the passenger side linkage etc.. Does it just pull out?

Doubt the cable tie will last long, but way better than leaving it flapping around.

The linkages do indeed just pop off. Use a lever between the faces and with care they come apart. No point in reversing them yet until you repair the zip tied end.

ok so for now:
Used double cable ties :) ( not a engineering solution but should work for the next 4 days when I'm at work :) :driving: )

Will try to find the linkage from a breaker if possible... (still had no luck taking mine off) cj-have no idea for how much do linkages go, so will have to see how much people want for them before making any offers :) (just got a message on ebay saying £50 for the whole linkage assembly delivered)

Thanks guys! especially cj10jeeper!

I've not seen linkages sold separately. You really need the whole assembly less the motor.
I've sent you a PM

The linkage/motor is held onto the bulkhead with a T30 screw at each end, undo, release the electrical connection to the motor & wiggle it free.
