E85 Paintwork Worries

Hi all,

Hoping the collective expertise of the forum could help me diagnose what's going on with my car paintwork.

At the edges of the paintwork, on two of the back panels (offside rear panel and the bit just above the boot lid) the paint is chipped or the lacquer is peeling, I can't work out what it is.

Does anyone know what has caused this, and how much it would cost to get it fixed? Should I get it fixed sharpish incase the chipped bits erode more, or can I leave it until I really get annoyed with it/sell the car?

Car in question is a 2005 E85, is it a common paintwork defect that the lacquer peels?

Odd that is only by the plastic trim - maybe the previous owner applied something to the trim that has caused this

Hi it looks like the lacquer is flaking where it hasn't been prepped or rubbed down properly round the edges . Poor workmanship by the garage it was painted

Yeah, I'm thinking it was a dodgy repair job or something by the previous owner, as I think I can see small dimples in the paintwork on the boot lid. I didn't notice it when I bought the car (Aug 2011), and only noticed a few months into ownership. (Just slow asking the question!)

Anyone have any ideas how much it'd cost to repair?

-Just gutted for you mate,there seems to be a lot of problems cropping up that shouldnt :(
 
I'd say its where the panel has been masked (badly) prior to paint causing the new paint edge to be open to the elements thus causing it to peel.
 
Sorry for the bad news . Avoid using steam cleaner or jet wash as it will get worse .im guessing a a few hundred at least. To be done properly all the trims should be removed so it could be rubbed down properly. My trade is a panel beater so I've seen this sort of thing before. Hope this helps .sorry mated :(
 
You won't lose anything by taking it into a paintshop and asking them to look at it. Hopefully not too expensive to repair. My guess, £2-300 tops.

Yeah, I feel a bit like :headbang: too. Just really annoying when something so small can cost so much. Even though it doesn't detract from the physical driving experience, it grips me because I know it's there!

It just seems like there are lots of little niggles with the car; condensation on headlight, window regulators failing, paintwork problems, roof motor failed (but fixed), bluetooth not pairing, satnav not locating itself, etc.

I thought BMWs were meant to be reliable! :(

No idea of its previous history, I've only had it since August.

I would be contacting a detailer to exam the paint and depth of it (in short confirm that it has has a re-spray and quality of it)

Armed with this information i would then tackle the person/place you bought it from
 
Iv had the same issues , car has had paint at some time , I rub down the affected area , mask off and give it a blast with a rattle can. wait a week to let the lacquer harden , check finish , normally its fine, if there are any blemmishes correction with a fine cutting paste, polish and wax , sorts it out , cost say 20 quid .

Nor did I when I bought it.

What would you say to the dealer if it was your car and you found out it had previously had a dodgy re-spray job?

Surely if the dealer wasn't aware it had been resprayed either, then I'd have no leg to stand on if I wanted him to pay to fix it or something?

I've had it since August, so I couldn't prove it wasn't me that had it done, I guess?

Depends on the dealer. I have peeling lacquer on the front bumper a year after purchase, took it back to the dealer (Sytners) and it was fixed FOC.

You've just given Andy a heart attack he'll be outside checking every square mm of his Zed with a microscope, have not seen 99% of his complusive glass is half empty posts :D
