E85 Headlights

Have an E85 2003 Z4 with a nearside front headlight not working which could be due to water which seems to have got in to the inside of it. It's been fitted with xenon bulbs evidently both of which work when swapped over as do the box like fitting. On getting a mechanic out he determined that the electrical plug internal wiring is knackered and a whole headlight is needed. Which is fine but am now very confused as there seems to be xenon bulbed headlights and conventional bulbed headlights. Are the two exchangeable that is to say can will a xenon bulb holder fit into or on a conventional headlight. Any help would be much appreciated.
 
There are 2 basic headlight uniths Halogen and xenon. The two are very different design of unit and cannot have internals readily swapped from one to another. They contain different looms, connector blocks (underneath of xenon for ballast)

Assuming you xenon are OEM xenon and not aftermarket bulbs fitted in then find a second hand xenon unit and swap in you ballast, bulb and ignitor.
