I thought my 3.0si was very good on fuel for the performance it offered? :?

Well mine is pretty fast and very good on fuel, I mean around 40 to 44MPG on a long run for a 3L 6 cylinder compared to my F20 118d which only achieved around 50 to 52MPG on a similar run and that's a 2L diesel. I'd say it's kind of like having your cake and eating it.

Isn't the N52 way more efficient than the M54, performance as well as economy? I have the N52 in my E89 and not only has it got good performance but the fuel economy is equally good, I am getting around 24MPG in town and on a long run over 40MPG, never achieved anything close to that from my E46 6 cylinder.

I believe it is, unless you have an autobox which seems to be to really stunt the economy. My Z4 (6 sp manual) seems a lot more economical than my 330i Auto Touring.

Mine is an auto and it's pretty good on fuel. Not sure how much more I would get if it was a manual.

They are reasonably quick cars , not slow at all. Not fast by modern standards . My mapped e90 330d is much quicker than my 3.0i z4 for example but less fun to drive by far .

N52 has 12% better economy over the M54 along with 10% more power, bmw’s own figures

Never seen that in text before. Good find. I still think you’d struggle to tell much of a difference in practice though.
