E85 Ashtray Lid Not Closing!

I've removed it from the console, now £2.70 better off which I suppose is a small bonus but can't find anything wrong! The cogs seem to be operating okay but what actually keeps it shut, I can't work it out?

I think he has removed all of them, but the closing mechanism only works when the unit is exactly level. Any slight twist and it will pop open again.

A coin will have lodged somewhere, common problem, but bloody annoying!

Don't think coins are causing the problem but did find £2.70 below the unit when I removed it!
You're right though it's bloody annoying!

When it happened to me I thought I had got them all but there was one hidden in there

I'm 100% nothing in there now but can't see what stops the cog wheel from turning when the lid is closed.

Got an astray assembly for sale from breaking my car:

You can have it for £45 delivered if that helps?

If its a similar design to the E89 there is a small bent metal spring type part that moves to keep the lid shut.
Maybe this has jumped out of place.
Here is a pic of the underside of the E89 one.
Its the metal pin on the right of the fag lighter

Well after removing all the switches I think I've found the problem!

Looks like a pin of some sort should slot into this but it's missing!

Thanks Nictrix, assembly seems to be different!

Thanks, I'm going to have a decent search in the car tomorrow when it's light to see if a can find the missing part, I'm hoping it's something that's fell out rather than something broken! If I can't find it then I will need to buy one, at least now I know how to disconnect all the switches and lighter, not an easy job!

Perhaps I need to also read up on how to do the aux fitting since I'm part of the way there! :D

I've messaged handy andy 3 or 4 times but unfortunately not had reply, thought I'd try here again before going ebay route, I know theres a couple on there.

Here's another one

Can't quite see from your pic. but mine would not shut. You're right, a tiny 'pin' was missing. I snipped the end off a small narrow tack / nail and inserted it into the hole. You can then see where it engages to lock into place. Superglue it in and hey presto. Worked for me.

I managed to get one for £25 on eBay from someone breaking a Z4 but I might try and fix the old one once I remove it, won't do any harm having a spare.

mine dont close either....did not want to spend £40 on a replacement...

thinking one day i will open it up to check what the issue is..

It's easy to remove, just one screw! Fitted the replacement today, only took 10minutes including swapping the switches over.
