I've removed it from the console, now £2.70 better off which I suppose is a small bonus but can't find anything wrong! The cogs seem to be operating okay but what actually keeps it shut, I can't work it out?

Well after removing all the switches I think I've found the problem!
Looks like a pin of some sort should slot into this but it's missing!

I'm going to have a decent search in the car tomorrow when it's light to see if a can find the missing part, I'm hoping it's something that's fell out rather than something broken! If I can't find it then I will need to buy one, at least now I know how to disconnect all the switches and lighter, not an easy job! 
Perhaps I need to also read up on how to do the aux fitting since I'm part of the way there!
I'm still looking for a replacement ashtray if anyone one had one for sale.
I've messaged handy andy 3 or 4 times but unfortunately not had reply, thought I'd try here again before going ebay route, I know theres a couple on there.
Can't quite see from your pic. but mine would not shut. You're right, a tiny 'pin' was missing. I snipped the end off a small narrow tack / nail and inserted it into the hole. You can then see where it engages to lock into place. Superglue it in and hey presto. Worked for me.

It's easy to remove, just one screw! Fitted the replacement today, only took 10minutes including swapping the switches over.
