E85 and the iPhone 4

Hi all, this is my first post. I realise this thread has been covered before, please be patient with me!

I just purchased a 53 plate 3.0 Z4 Roadster from Dick Lovett Swindon. I wanted to buy something a little more economical than my XKR (not difficult) but that still had good build quality and some go! I purchased this from a main agent, Dick Lovett, Swindon, as it is a one owner car supplied by them with only 20k miles on it so an older car but with plenty of life left in it, so to the problem.

The car is very high spec factory sat nav etc. It was advertised with Bluetooth but probably should have been more accurately advertised as "Bluetooth enabled" I probably should have looked into this further but as you will all know, as I now do, "It ain't that simple"! The car has the 644 enablement, listed as "Enhanced Bluetooth" and shows the HiFi syst as "Professional Carver". The salesman had only been with BMW for 8 days when I went to see it and although helplful frankly clueless! I asked him to pair my iPhone 4 with the system on handover and of course it would not do it and the "fun" started. I took the car home and the follow up advised me that I would need a replacement adapter for the arm rest holder to take the iPhone 4 and also the Eject Box Kit to take that, the posts on this show this a being a bit of a job to fit, the labour quote is one hour. Can I have confirmation from those of you in the know that this will give me full bluetooth, but hard connected, use of the phone I believe with charging?

The next question is, what more is needed to make this usable as a media application so I can use the music on my iPhone with the integral music system, if indeed this is possible as it seems from my reading this may only be possible post '09 cars?

Having said all this am I better off having an after market system like a high end Parrot fitted and is it possible to do so with the media compatability??

I have tried two BMW dealerships and even they seem vague as to what is needed and what to do. This is a return to BMW after I sold my pre-Evo M3 (great car) 10 years ago 'cos i was fed up by the franchise dealers and their p*ss taking!! Hope I am not going to feel the same all over again. Thanks all!

Hi

Forget the center console / eject box, waste of money and not needed for Bluetooth to work, will only improve reception which isn't really a problem these days

With regards to charging and playing music from your iPhone I would go for a intravee, dension or alike
 
If you have BT, you can pair the iPhone without problems subject to the ULF module being ok.

The oldest Z4 I tried to pair an iPhone with was a 2004 Z, so unless you are really unlucky with the ULF module.

You will need the new eject box ( smartphones are wider than the "normal" basic phones)
The cradles are unique to each phone infact iPhone 3G/S have a different cradle to iP4 /4S and new iP5 will be another
The cradle only provides power and additional aerial power and B/T provides the connection
No sound
One economical way of getting sound is a B/T receiver plugged into your AUX (if you have one ) and transmit sound to Head unit that way

There are several other systems that integrate into car such as Intravee depends on how much you want to spend

You will need the 4 digit paring code to link the iPhone to B/T
 
For an iPhone, the cradle does not even provide a connection to an aerial as the iPhone blocks that anyway.

Hence me not bothering with a cradle as it does nothing but charge, which the Intravee does as well.

Which would explain why in poor signal areas in or out of cradle .......no difference
 
Indeed. Cradles are now a waste of money for smart phones. In addition to having to remove the phone cover to get it in, there is little to be gained except for charging the thing. Very expensive charger at that as well.
 
I have an iPhone cable that has a USB for charging and a 3.5mm jack for aux. cost me about £5 and I've made it switched too. No need for these fancy expensive gizmos.
 
Hi All and thanks for the input so far.
By following other threads on linking generically I have now managed to get the Nav system to recognise the phone an vice versa. I have input the the pass code via the iPhone and the phone says "Paired" for a second or two then (unfortunately) "Not" appears in front of it, the screen on the car says "Paired Succesfully" for a bit longer then slips back to "Pairing with Phone" I have left it running for a period of time but nothing happens. The car system appears on the phone but I have deleted the device and started again same thing as I have seen that other posts have said the system is "temperamental" but with no joy.

I shall post some pics of the car shortly as soon as weather improves a bit a cleaning it is worthwhile!!

Have you cleared all pairings at car end ,might be at maximum from previous use
 
Remember that you have to turn the ignition key back to position 0 after the phone is paired or it loses the pairing

+1 on clearing all existing pairings first before trying to set it up. That's fixed it for several people on here
 
Hey Stuart, think mine is the same colour as yours, Toledo Blue, but has beige New England leather?

Anyway, cleared all the previous pairings, no problem and as soon as the "Connected" text came up on the iPhone and the pairing confirmation came up on the car screen I immediately turned ign to "0" but still didn't lock in. I also let it run again and cancelled the device and paired again....nothing.

So still no further forward I am afraid.

Thanks anyway, further thoughts appreciated if anyone has any!!
 
the problem with the eject box is the location... a complete pain in the ass putting it in there and taking it out IMO. Here is my solution (which I now need to upgrade since getting iphone 5) http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=28344
