E85 2003 2.5 - Electrical Issues

Hi all

I have recently brought a cheap 2003 2.5 z4 in the hopes of fixing the issues and turning into a track car. Have sorted the eps issues however now stuck on some strange electrical issues. Window switches on both the drivers and passengers side dont work however when providing power directly to the window motor the motor works fine. Additionally the stalk for windscreen wipers and washer jets is completely dead. Lastly the instrument cluster lights for high beams, indicators and fog lights do not illuminate when the respective things are turned on (external lights do illuminate). Also an airbag light on the dash however have been unable to read with basic obd scanner. Unsure if these are all liked to the same module or control panel somewhere but had no joy trying to understand wiring diagrams. Help is much appreciated. Thanks

Jonny

Seen your post on facebook, as you're based in Peterborough you would be best to get into contact with either [ref]bigwinn[/ref] (Lincoln) or [ref]enuff_zed[/ref] (Attleborough) as they will be able to sort the airbag issue and code the modules to the car.

Sounds like you also have a GM5 fault which can be repaired. There are people on ebay who do it but I don't know which one to recommend.

Actually sounds to me like it’s the central airbag module corrupting the k-bus and causing all the other issues too.
If you pop out the coin holder behind the handbrake you can remove the electrical plug on that module (SIM85). If everything else then starts to work properly you have found your problem.

Thanks for this, gives me an idea of some of the potential culprits. Saw Enuff zed gave the idea of unplugging the air bag module which will help rule that one out. Fingers crossed this isn’t an endless electrical issue as have got through all the issues with the eps needing rebuilding just want to be able to get it mot’d and drive it. Thanks again much appreciated!

Will give this a go tomorrow morning. Thank you very much for the suggestion, very helpful. Hopefully will narrow it down.

Just the black electrical plug. Don’t worry about the green fibre optic one. The black one has a lever on top. You have to push that from vertical to horizontal to unhook the plug.

Got to the area and was covered in mould so clearly has water ingress. Once unplugged all issues previously mentioned worked as expected so thank you very much for this - life saver! Did clean the plug and dry it out and plug it back in but didn’t fix so clearly the module needs changing. If I buy a new module and fit, is a specialist job to code the module or should most garages be able to do it? Wondered if it can be done remotely aswell as the vehicle has no MOT.
Thank you

You need to get the part number from your unit and then use Realoem to find a compatible match.
Need the rear console section out and the front section loosened enough to lift and get the module out.
Has to be coded in the car. Bigwinn or I can do it.
However, you are going to have trouble getting the plug cleaned out I think. So see if you can get a module with a length of loom too, just in case.
Not found a garage that can do it yet, though several claim they can but then backtrack.
So first things first, get the number and put a wanted ad on here for one, or any of the compatible batch.
I have a couple left but away until new year so can’t check.
