E-Reader recommendations?

I'm wanting to get myself a good ereader at some point in the next few weeks. Books (obviously), but also colour if possible so I can download and read graphic novels and browse the internet. Would like a decent battery and nothing too large or heavy.

I have an ipad 2 but its not the most easy on the eye when it comes to prolonged reading.

Any recommendations?

The main problem with anything with a colour screen is battery life, and you won't get a colour screen that's as easy on the eye as an e-ink screen. In addition, as you already have an iPad you'd be duplicating a lot of the functionality, so I would think that you'd be better off using the iPad for the Internet browsing/graphic novels and supplementing it with a good e-ink reader for 'normal' books.

IMO for reading normal B&W books, it's hard to look past the Paperwhite Kindles - superb legibility, immense battery life and, if you want it, there's a model with free 3G so that you can download more content on demand.

Can see the logic but ideally I'd want to take just one device out with me to read and browse the internet.
ipad it may be then.

I am with Perry - only I have tablet for web browsing and a kobo mini for reading. Kobo mini fits into shirt pocket so easy to carry about. Brilliant battery life, easy to read and only £30. Also has basic web browser for emergencies.

x3 with Perry!

I've personally a kindle keyboard 3g for books and textbooks. Couldn't ask it to do anymore!

I would advise against the ipad as a book reader - Now I am a big apple fan but the ipad is just too heavy to read if you hold it up - the ipad mini might be better but I have not read a book on it

Husband felt that with his iPad, hence got kobo mini too. I used to read books on my Nexus which is iPad mini sized, but ereader is much comfier and lighter to hold.

It's not ideal for reading books, fatigue sets in far sooner than on an e-paper (or similar) display.

I've had a Kindle Paperwhite for over a year now and can't really fault it....but two weeks ago I bought an iPad Mini Retina which was on offer at £259. Just the basic WIFI model but I carry a MIFI device with me everywhere which gives me 4G/3G connection pretty much everywhere I need it. (if you don't have a MIFI device...get one!)

The mini fits in my jacket pocket, is pretty light, easy to handle and the sharpness of the retina display makes it easy on the eyes for reading. I just use the Kindle app.

I'm with the others on this, I have an iPad 2 also and have just bought a Kindle paper white. When travelling I'm now taking an ultra book, a kindle, an iPad and a smartphone. It's getting nuts!

The kindle is by far the easiest on the eye for reading. I don't know how good the kindle hdx is for reading, but I can't imagine it being any better than an iPad.

Thanks all. So it looks like I need to investigate the ipad mini retina, kindle paperwhite and MiFi

+1

Ok... I am the only Sony user then :D

I did buy Mrs PVR a Kindle Paerwhite for Christmas though.

Remember to download the best book organiser software though, Calibre. It is free and is fantastic.

Yep, have to agree for reading books just go with an eReader. I've got a Kobo Glo with the backlight and it's great - battery lasts for weeks between charges as well.

was really an old-school book person but having bought the Kindle Paperwhite I'm converted. It's almost too easy to buy the next book you want but when I was off work with a bad back & addicted to the Inspector Montalbano series of books with the press of a button I could have the next one. My sister has an older Kindle without the backlight & wishes she'd waited for the Paperwhite. Battery lasts a long time even when I was on holiday & using it to pick up email etc.

I have a Kindle HD and I love it .... With all the traveling I do I get to read a lot of books ...
I also have a mini IPad with a kindle app, but never use it ... Its hard on the eyes ....

The kindle has wifi, but I only use it for buying new books .....

I have a kindle and an iPad mini.

I mostly use the mini. You can read books, magazines and browse.

With the kindle you can only use it for books however it does come in handy to take to the beach, park etccc where an iPad might attract the wrong attention.

Where was this offer for the retina? At £259 please?

It was a combination of offers that all came together at once. PCWorld had a cashback offer a few weeks ago on tablets. I also have access to an 8% discount through my work. I'm sure lots of people have access to this if you work for a large company. Then Quidco brought the price to £259...couldn't really say no.
