E-brake not working

Looking at a used Z4 and the owner says the e-brake isn't working (it's a 2006 3.0 manual). I don't see much online regarding this topic. What am I looking at for repairs on this? Thanks!

That’s impossible to answer without knowing what’s wrong with it, you need to know details.

Something not quite right there OP. :?

If it's a 2006 car it's an E85/86 and they don't have an e-brake! That came along with the E89 in 2009.

Some countries use the term 'e-brake' to mean both 'emergency handbrake' and 'electronic handbrake'.
 
Emergency brake. Def has one of those. I have no more details than that. Could it just be the adjustment of the cables or likely it needs more?
 
Could be they just need adjusting. Could try that first, failing that take the brakes apart to see the state of the shoes etc.

Might be referring to what the handbook calls the "drive-off assistant". That's the thing that holds the car on a gradient for a couple of seconds after you've taken your foot off the brake pedal.

Mine failed about three years ago, and it turned out that the box of tricks that controlled it also controls lots of other things and was actually very expensive. The unit itself cost about £700, plus fitting. Because this was originally diagnosed by the independent specialist I use, I was confident the diagnosis was accurate. Fortunately I still have the extended warranty (!) and BMW themselves were as good as gold about it, so it only cost me the £100 excess all in.

The drive-off assistant device is useful but not essential, though I don't know how quickly other things would have failed if the unit had not been replaced.

TS is looking at an E85, so no "drive off assistant" or any of that trickery. Just your plain old mechanical handbrake.....

Parts prices (bmw stealer prices):

Lever unit: about £300
Bowden cable: about £30 /side
brake shoes: about £90

TS is looking at an E85, so no "drive off assistant" or any of that trickery. Just your plain old mechanical handbrake.....

Mine is an E85 - maybe the pre-facelift ones don't have the feature?

Hmm yes maybe

But afaik the hill brake assist function works on the ABS/ESP pump, and we're talking about the handbrake here. And that is afaik still a completely manual system. So a simple ratchting lever, bowden cables and brake shoes. No computercontrolled actuators.

Or do you think otherwise? Have you had your handbrake apart?
Mine doesnt have any of this and according to the BMW parts catalog the parts are exactly the same between pre facelift and post facelift.
So I can't imagine the handbrake having anything to do with either this or the problem in the car the TS is looking at. ("problem with the e-brake")
