DVD Drive Not Detected

My laptop is a HP DV6552ea with Vista Home Premium. The DVD drive light flashes and tray can only be ejected during BIOS stage. As soon as boot process enters Windows stage. The tray cannot be ejected. Device manager does not show any optical drive, and scanning hardware also found nothing.

I had tried different versions of BIOS but did not work. BIOS screen does not show any Primary or Secondary IDE drives.

I searched internet for advice, but so far did not really help. Can anyone help? Thank you. :)

As the bios doesnt even detect the drive then i would say the drive has had it.

is it hot swappable? could you get hold of a spare one (even a different brand and change the caddy it is mounted to)

as above - if not seen at BIOS stage that either drive is caput or the cable is caput
if you try the hot swap method and its still not seen by the BIOS then you may have a controller problem which on a laptop i presume will be £$£$£$ to fix :)

I formatted the laptop 1 week ago, and DVD drive worked as soon as it was completed, i.e. device manager showed optical drive. I wondered some windows or other software updates after had changed something. I think I have to try restore the setting.

Any other easy solution I can try before system restore? Otherwise, I have to run windows updates one by one to identify what update changes it. :(
