Dust in tach and speedo

Hi Guys, new to the forum and the Z4 world. Got to say the Z is not my first BMW but it's now my favorite.

I have been cleaning up the vehicle (bought used) and noticed quite a bit of dust which has collected in the tach and speedo. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you have any tips on how to deal with it?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi and welcome - put an entry in the Newbie section with details and phots of your Zed.

As Taz x not had this problem and not sure how to deal with it. Have you tried (gently) putting a vacuum against the edges of the display and seeing if this creates enough suction to get the dust out. I have never had to remove the displsay unit so am uncertian if it comes apart or is sealed. My gues that to stop tampering it's sealed.

Thanks I will try the vacuum idea. I too could not figure it out. My Z is a 2005. I'll post pics in the newbie section shortly.

This is the DIY I used with good results (Originally posted by Starscream):

Taking it out and apart is actually pretty easy,

You remove the entire speedo with one little bolt,
Look at the top of the speedo housing, in the middle you will see one torx bolt, T25 I think?

Remove that and then you can wiggle the speedo out,
Helps if you have the steering wheel pulled out and down, There is one or two electrical connectors in the back of the speedo, they are pretty simple to remove,

Then you need a smaller torx driver to take apart the speedo housing, somewhere between 6 and 10, Its been a while but again this isn't too hard,
I remember the plastic clips after you have removed the torx screws being harder to seperate,

Then the front of the speedo with the 2 plastic lenses you're trying to clean will pull away and you can clean them.

But its really not hard at all!

Additional note: When you reconnect the electrical plug to the speedo it will start to whir and click....no problems once everything is fully installed.

Seems to be a problem with the older model Z4's. My 2003 had this problem as well. I even got a replaced under warranty instrument cluster and still happened.
