em brakes and dtc, just a shot but could be,, take out sensors on each wheel and clean with a rag then spray with wd40 and replace, follow cables back to that little black box behind plastic wheel arch prize open clean out mud etc and spray wd40.sensors are like a steel rod very strong carbon up on the tips.cured mine all for a tin of wd40 and 1 hour of my time job well done very pleased.over a year now no trouble touch wood, dont like stealers£000.00. hope it helps. :(

Had a drive planned this weekend :headbang:

Where are the sensors? I'll be out with the jack like a shot....!

It's booked in at the stealers, but TBH I would prefer not to take it in, as I've just spent a fortune on a few treats for the car, and really dont need a big bill from John Clarks Dundee - last bill from there was £700 :x

Sorry to see this - seems that you could sort with some effort though.

Off topic, but Stuart Truman may be onto something with his theory that £700 is a popular / standard invoice amount...

Brake sensor cables have snapped on front near side wheel. Haven't checked the ABS sensors as it started pissing with rain and no room in garage. :headbang:

Looks like its a trip to the stealers on Monday :(

Unless anyone knows a good Indy near Dundee or Perth? :D

Hmmm, I guess since they are not lit up red, then its not *too* serious...? :?

That's what I thought with my E46 3 series. Turned out to be quite serious when I hit a slippy patch on a roundabout...

The car is drivable, but would prefer the safety net of the driver aids being there, particularly as the roads are wet and greasy here just now. Currently all driver aids are inactive... :(

Looks like the weekend hoon is off. It's not quite the same in the Polo

Do you mean the brake pad wear sensors? From what I have read n the TIS the DSC unit doesn't even read those signals, and even if it did I can't imagine it shutting off because of it. I'd say that the brake wear telltale is therefore a separate issue to the DSC and brake warning telltales being on, which indicate a DSC system problem.

How did the brake wear sensor cabled get broken? It's possible that whatever did that has also damaged the wheel rotation sensor...

Update:

Took it in to the stealers this morning. Got a call to say it was a sensor failure and that they will get the part this afternoon. £300 all in, or there abouts.

Not great, but when you're expecting £700, less than half that amount sound pretty good to me...

I had similar last year on my 5er. Engine management light came on, local Kwik Fit told me it was likely the cat needed replacing. Panic stations. Turned out it was a sensor, about a £150 job.

The odd thing was that I was really happy at the time..... in retrospect, I should have been ranting about having to pay £150 when there was actually nothing wrong with the car....

Further update:

Car is back. Rear pulse sensor was the root cause of the DSC light being on. Sorted.

The brake pad light is still on. They have quoted me for £700 to replace all discs and pads :x I KNOW that the front discs and pads were replaced less than 2 yrs ago and have only covered 20k miles - I have the invoice to prove it. The rears, I am not so sure. I have visually checked all pads and they have 4mm minimum, all round.

I think the dealer is taking the Mikey Bliss and has failed to spot the real fault, which is a snapped pad sensor cable - which I spotted on the near side front.

Any thoughts? What mileage and time period do your discs/pads last??

At worst I'll order the bits and change myself.

Did you point out the snapped sensor cable, and what did they say ? Discs should last waaaaay longer than 2 years. On my wife's Honda they lasted at least 50k miles, and 4 years IIRC. Pads sound fine, though wear a lot faster, guessing I got through 2 or 3 sets in that time, but it's an auto so you are on the brakes a lot more. As for a £700 bill (there's tat magic number again...), remember a dealer charges what, £90 an hour labour ? I'd get them to take another look at the cable... And if they insist it's the discs and pads, then if you have the skills get the bits and do yourself... Just my tuppence worth

I didnt mention the cable Bing, I wanted to see what their reaction would be, and whether they would do their homework and find out the real cause of the problem, instead of relying on a diagnostic readout. They failed ;)

Still need to try and find a local indy I can trust. The garage I took my 3 series to messed the car up, as they don't really deal with anything more sophisticated that your average hatchback, which is fine when the Polo has something that needs fixed, but I wouldnt trust them with the zed.

I think think there might be a BMW indy in Dundee, or at least so I'm told. Need to go have a look. I'm back at work on Wed, so I'll have a look then.

At least the driver aids are fully functional now, and the brakes have plenty left, despite the warning light, so I'm a happy chap for now :)

Strange a diagnostic hasn't pointed them it the right direction given there is a fault light on, unless of course they didn't bother. And if they did, isn't the diagnostic smart enough to pinpoint where the fault is coming from at least, i.e. one wheel ? I don't know as I am not knowledgeable about the software... But it sounds strange that they would simply say change all discs and pads - definitely lazy, if not taking the pi$$. Indy is the way to go, hope you find one... Have you had a look on Pistonheads for recommends ?

Bing, there's only two sensors for four wheels, the wear indicator light is an idiot light in the truest sense. I suppose it's to get you to inspect all 4 wheels to determine the actual cause. Wear on the indicator breaks a circuit the same as a broken cable, there's no way to know if it's true wear or a fault elsewhere in the circuit, except for a thorough inspection.

Adamski, very sneaky test to check their integrity. I can't imagine, 700GBP of work based on an idiot light without any verification! Criminal! You certainly need to find another garage.
