DSC / Yaw Rate Sensor - help required

Hi

Long time reader, first time poster.

I recently got the dreaded three lights on my dash (E86 3.0si Coupe). I had the codes read at my local garage and (after clearing some old codes) the problem seems to be "5E30 DSC sensor, lateral acceleration, plausibility". Tha garage advised that a new DSC sensor (or "Yaw sensor") would be required. BMW want nearly £500 for the part (part #34526769174). I have found refurbished parts for between £250 and £350.

I have a couple of questions and would really appreciate any help:

1. Does anyone know if these parts need recalibrating following fitting or are they just plug and play? If yes, can this easily be done via INPA?

2. Does anyone know if other BMW yaw sensors (i.e. different part numbers) would be compatible with the E86 (older E85s use a slightly different part which can be found for around £50)?

You can check on realoem.com for part compatibility. I'm fairly sure that there is no coding or calibration required.

Thanks for the quick response!

On realoem it states on the page for part 34526769174 that it supersedes part 34526764018 which is "exchangeable retrospectively" (exact text below). Do you know whether this means that 4018 would be OK on my car or is it referring to the other way around (i.e. 9174 would fit the earlier car)?

Rather confusingly, on the page for part 4018 it states that it is superseded by 9174 but that it is "nonexchangeable retrospectively".

Any insight greatly appriciated.

Hi @sc9812, if you are still around, wondering what was the outcome as I have the same issue (caused by well known water leak in door seals).
Won't spend 1000$ on a 10$ sensor. looking for options.

Find the part number on realoem. Go on Ebay and buy a second hand unit. Mine cost 100 euro with a 6 month guarantee. Make sure carpet is dry. Double check the wiring and connector that they are clean. Reattach the sensor. This should fix the issue.

Boot up inpa and then you can check the sensor and if need be recalibrate the dsc sensor. It's not the hardest job.

Thanks for the reply, problem is this specific sensor (34526769174) seems to have been deployed for a very limited period / small number of Z4's. Therefore, I couldn't find any used units on ebay or elsewhere, scrap yards included. Only found some refurb on eBay for over 600$... Not willing to spend such money on a sensor worth 10$ to produce. Until I find one for a decent price I guess I'll start practicing my drifting skills seriously, open to any tips on where to find a replacement or thoughts on not replacing it / impact on driving.

Yes found that. However, this was the OP question and am also wondering if these other part numbers are compatible or not compatible? Wording and references are not perfectly clear to me. Maybe it's worth a try for such a price difference, but can't count on returns.

Not sure what you mean, all part numbers listed in my previous post should work in your car as far as I understand.

Sorry for my delayed reply! I ended up ordering a refurbished part on ebay (part number 34526769174) - I paid £200. I did a bit of research online which suggested only that specific part number was suitable for an e86.

The job was easy enough (driver’s seat out (RHD car) and the part is under the carpet). It was plug and play so no need to program in etc, lights had cleared after fitting.
