Drink Driving

I'm sure none of you guys do but be warned they are on the prowl.

Went to rugby training last night. Finished by 8 to watch the first half of the France game, had a single pint of Carling. Pulled out of the club at half time to go home and they were sat waiting at the bottom of the drive. Even though i knew i was under, it still made me nervous. Having literally finished the beer 5 minutes before and not having eaten since lunchtime, my arse was a bit twitchy. First time i have ever been breathalysed, but although it showed alcohol i was clear to go.

Either way gents don't take any chances. We all love our cars and love driving them

i know i would be twitching too, i know if i've had a pint having had no lunch i feel pretty pissed. I must be a lightweight! Always stick to one shandy or half a pint if i know i'm driving, unless i'm having a big slap up meal, then i might have one :)

Oh I am sure this will spark some debate. The holier than thou brigade who would never consider having a single drink if they knew they were driving.

You're obviously smart enough to know your limits (even though you hadn't eaten) but I guess it would have been pretty nerve wracking - even though you'd had just the one.

Up in Scotland the limit is now even lower than down south, a good thing!) But even before the new limit I would never even risk having even one. If I've got the car then it's soft drinks. Why risk it and by that I don't mean getting caught, your reactions will be effected regardless.

All i can say is even though i was in the 'right' according to the law, i still consider it a valuable lesson learnt. Had that 'one' been a Stella it could have easily been a different outcome. Probably would have cost me my job which in turn could cost me my house and god knows what else.

Really just a polite heads up to everyone out there to be safe and responsible.

Definately better to be safe than risk your licence or even worse a horrible accident if your driving is impaired. I will still have a pint if I'm eating but seen mates get banned when they thought they were still under the limit so I no its not worth pushing it

I don't knock anyone for having just one. I think the doubt that you had would be removed if the law said no drinks when driving.

I had a mate killed on his bike years ago by a guy who had a drink but passed a breath test , I wouldn't want that on my conscience so I don't do it at all , but each to their own as most people I know have no problem drinking and driving home , ironically most of them live ten mins walk from where they drink !
Plus , if I'm drinking I'm going home drunk and reaching for alka seltzer in the morning , no point in doing half a job

Having been accused in the past of being a part of the " Holier than thou "brigade you can guess what I will say :

DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE - if you're thirsty and intend to drive have a soft drink - it's just not worth the risk to yourself and ohers !

Here endeth the lesson !!

I will sometimes have one pint or one small (125ml) wine when I'm driving, however, it's usually coffee and cakes when we're out and about in the Zed :coffee:

I'm in the "don't drink anything before driving" camp, certainly since buying the Z4 (seriously, that clutch is tricky enough sober). But I'm pretty sure I'm not "holier than thou" about it.

Prior to that in my E46 330D I would have one, normal strength brown beer as long as I'd eaten properly. (Without sufficient grub, I'd be tw*tted after one beer).

What I find most interesting/weird/wrong, is that we have a law which is an arbitrarily decided "limit", and yet (unlike the French) there's no law about carrying a breathalyzer with which to test your levels before driving.

This leaves a lot of "one pinters", like OP, with no clue as to whether they're breaking the law or not.

Good reminder and worthy of posting. I'm not against a single drink over dinner and drive, so not a part of the holier than thou brigade.

What really concerns me is the folks who get really drunk the night before then commute to work the following morning.

StuartC - no longer true in France. That has ceased.

Really sneaky though waiting outside a rugby club when the World Cup games are on..

That reminded me of a few years back when Police went round pub car parks putting little coloured dot stickers on cars rear bumpers. A different colour each night, then if spotted later that night, they knew it had been in a pub and would pull it !

Good! Fair play I say, the less drink drivers on the road the better, whatever means it takes to catch them., world cup or no world cup I don't see why that matters.
Not houlier than thou though, I've had *a* pint and driven before many a time, it's within the law so no problem for me.

Up here in Scotland any doubt has been removed. One pint and you are over!

The next stage is are you over the day after and I have one mate who had 6-7 pints but home by 10. Still over going to work the next day at six under the new laws.

The new law has made a huge difference to what people do though which can only be a good thing.

As a fellow Scot, I completely agree

Even if the difference is no more than drinking (or not drinking) 200ml of lager than before, it's made a big difference in the awareness and peoples behavior which is a good thinkg. I would say though, the new level doesn't make much odds the next morning, if you're potentially over before, chances are you're going to be over regardless.

As for waiting outside a pub, good! It's called being proactive. Same as speed traps at dangerous junctions or schools

England will catch on, they always do, smoking laws, 5p for carrier bags...

Usually have a pint when eating out and drive after, no problems.

If they want there to be a bit of discrepency in the law then who am I to argue? simple thing is to have a 0.00 drink drive limit, but I understand how difficult that may be.

1 pint and driving is probably no worse than eating whilst driving, messing around with the radio/heater controls whilst driving, smoking whilst driving or having a conversation whilst driving.

I for one know I get distracted when trying to talk in the car and tend not to as i'd rather concentrate on the road.

In short this is just not worth it. having any alcoholic drink and driving home in this day and age is just not worth losing your licence (life) for a pint / half does not in any way make sense

I think the current limit is fine as it is. People with young kids in the car, people texting,
using smartphones, people on cannabis, smokers are all way more of a menace than someone under our existing limit is.

If a law is brought in by the SNP it should have no place in England because it's likely to be a nanny state dictatorial, poorly conceived law.
