Dreaded roof motor :(

Hi folks,

I know this is a common problem, tried to hunt the forums for the topic of the chap that fixes this for about £500. I'm based just outside Edinburgh, willing to travel if the price is right.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again, I'm abit miffed that BMW never took the time to fix this problem permanently while updating the facelift.

Garage near me is saying if I can source a new motor, they can fit it for about £400. Talking about possibly fitting it inside the boot instead (unsure if this is possible considering its fixed to the soft top)

Any advice would be grateful.

Cheers

Sorry to hear you are yet another victim of a failed roof motor mate

Hope you get it sorted quickly

I think this is the £500 roof offer link you mentioned http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=73041

Just done a search and it's bowser134 that's made the offer through January! Nevertheless this is the guy you want to check on - use the search function above and you should be able to see his posts. He's done many of the roofs for forum members - take a look.

Someone should be able to offer a link - I'm not certain how. . . .

:driving:

If you do a google search there are several German posts on fitting the motor in a top corner of the boot, so it is perfectly possible. Here's one link, sorry it's in german. http://www.zroadster.com/forum/index.php?threads/herbst-winterangebot-hydraulikpumpe-trockenlegen-und-sicher-in-den-kofferraum-verbauen.79900/

I DIY'd my failed roof motor - Its not hard, but you do need a garage and 2 people for some parts.

I just 'cleaned' mine by running it submerged in a jug of diesel, and then sprayed in a good few squirts of motor oil.

2 years on, its still running smoother then ever! Cost = Zero. I know it takes a while, but its definitely fulfilling.

Even my Golf's hydraulics are inside the boot, and 22 years after build, that is still working like when new. Never understood the location in a potential wet area of the pump in the Z4 or why not completely covering it in a waterproof mould to avoid it getting wet.
