Dragon drivers...

I know some of you ran the Dragon at Homecoming last year. I want to give it a go after my time at the Performance Center. What's the best route to get there? How long to get there? How long to run the Dragon?

I'm trying to time it so I'm not any where near Charlotte when the race traffic hits (big NASCAR even there over that weekend and I don't want to get stuck in it.)

It was incredibly awesome, we even had a bear cub come shooting across the road in front of our group. Fortunate Mom Bear was not following behind! Ran the Dragon 3 times!

JoAnna, remember the route up there? I'm going to try to get some of the other participants to run it with me, but I'm going either way--just want to spend time on the Dragon rather than getting there!!! You all were back for dinner, iirc so it's doable in a day. I'm going straight home from there.

If you're using a GPS, just set it for Robbinsville, NC and head north on 129 into Tennessee. It doesn't take long to run it. When you're done, you aren't far from I-40 to take you home.

Thanks, Rabman, I have one and will take your advice. The routes the Deal's Gap and Dragon websites just see to be the far way 'round.

I suggest that you make a calm run following all the posted speeds first time through to make sure the run is clear of those flashing lights. I have found that early morning just after first light is usually clear. Have fun it is a blast!!

Thanks, had planned to keep it within posted limits this time. Tennessee makes a lot of money there! I want to get up early Sunday and head that way from the Performance Center. I can't believe I live within about 4 hours and don't head there often.

Your best option is to go during the middle of the week, less bikes and not prone to a get-together for vehicles, ala MINI's (over 500 hundred at the last GTG). Use GPS or whatever to get there, and then do at least one run at the speed limit and gauge the conditions. Check for leaves and other debris on the roadway that may pose a hindrance to any maneuvers that you may make, and proceed accordingly. Keep in mind that you MUST stay in your lane at all times!!!!! :driving:

Let me know when you are planning to go, and I may join you. Hope that Hubby brings his barf bag,,,,he will need it!

Hmmm, on that thought, maybe we should invite Phil, and see what his new car can do!!! :poke:

I'll be going on Sunday after the driving school. Hubby is going to be at Kerr Lake. Just me and my Z. :driving:

We really should get up a Dragon run from the "locals" this summer-we could have a great time.

When is the driving school? If you a planning to go immediately after, be aware that it is about a 3-4 hour drive out of Spartanburg, depending on traffic. :(

I have spent a lot of time over at Kerr (Buggs Island) over the last 30 years... Is he fishing for Bass or Stripers?

Probably just tight-line for catfish. His brothers and sisters are going up (another reason I'm going to be in SC for the weekend, ). UNC has a rec area just south of the Virginia line (north of Henderson Point). He has fished in tournaments on that lake before (large mouth bass) and caught a few stripers. We usually just take a canoe or kayak when we go, if we take a boat at all.

School's on Saturday so I plan getting up early on Sunday and heading that way. Should get me home before dark (it's around 4 hours home from Asheville and I figure about an hour from the top of the Dragon to Asheville).
