Door Lock Barrel Replacement

Hi folks,
I've spent some time searching various threads trying to find an answer to my problem but have come up blank, and wonder if anyone here has encountered the same issue?
The drivers door lock just spins in the barrel when the key is turned. I've had the door handle off but couldn't see how to actually remove the barrel itself...the temptation/frustration to force things too hard overcame me so I put the handle back before any damage was done!! I visited an independent specialist who said that a new barrel could be ordered at a cost of £70 + VAT....expensive because the new barrel needs to be coded?
I know most people probably never use the door lock but if the key fob dies then getting in will be a major headache! Has anyone else heard of "coded" barrels?

Many thanks!

do you mean they change the pins to work with you existing key?

rather then the old way of replacing all the barrels in the car so you dont have a new set of keys too

Apparently it comes as a whole unit now? I'm going to have to do some further investigation as I thought the same as you, that the pins are changed so the original key still fits!

having googles, there are repair kits for other bmws of similar age,

http://www.lockrepairkit.com/products.html

so maybe one of them would fix it

You mean take out the whole of the lock barrel from the door? There is an Hex bolt in the door shut, take that out and barrel will slide out.
