Hi people,

The drivers side door handle has always been hard to open and this evening it has given up on me. When you go to open the door from the outside nothing happens, the handle goes up but the door doesnt open. It opens fine from the inside though.

Is this an easy fix or will I need some new parts etc...? Thanks for your help people

I have found this, can anyone tell me which part will need replacing if the door handle doesnt work? I've read on here that its more than likely the cable between the handle and the lock mechanism.... See below

No idea what could be wrong.. but i spare cable at home (which i got from a breakers when i got a few parts as they didnt know what it was!) its part 16 in your diagram.

I had this happen. Over a period of about 6 months I notice the door got more and more difficult to open from the outside until the point where the cable connected to the handle and the locking mechanism came off of the "cable carrier". I was unable to open my door from the outside. Went to BMW $700 they wanted to charge me.

My original thread about this... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18281&p=266781#p266781

I ended paying $500 after buying the parts from another dealer that was willing to negotiate.

The clue is likely to be in a better understanding of 'door ....has always been hard to open'

Did it require force, ever more movement of the lever, etc.?

One thing for certain is it's not part 16 that's being offered as that's the internal bowden cable and also the actula lock must work, therefor it's handle, carrier or similar.

I think you have to strip the door out, take the lock off and see if you have overstretched a cable (part 22), broken part of the handle mechanism, or similar. You may get away with simple adjustment.

Sorry to say this is the mother of all jobs to get to and really needs specilaist tools to unclip the handle unless you make your own. Acess is through the hole at the end of the door,

Well I've had the inside of the door panel off this morning and looked at everything and it all appears to be fine. The bowden cable isnt stretched or broken and the door handle on the inside of the car still opens the door. (the outside still does nothing).

I have read that you need a specialist tool to remove the outer door handle, any idea what the part number is or how much it is? Or how I even remove the outer door handle?

I'm a little stumped on what could be wrong - anyone with some bright ideas?

M

Tool is 2 part and is dealer only, but you can remove it with dexterity through the access holes using levers. I cannot even begin to describe the process, but TIS manual tells you.

As I said before the issue is certain to be the lock or short Bowden cable to handle so everything would look fine with door card off.

So is there no way I can get hold of the tool that I need to get the door handle off? I understand that you gain access to the outer door handle through the rubber cover at the end of the door? (its black and looks like a rounded rectangle)...

Where can I get any the manual for removing the door handle? You mentioned TIS????

Thanks for your help so far,
M

Well I'm sure there's a way but my point is it's not an over the counter tool or one that BMW sell to the public (or not at a reasonable rate anyhow)

TIS is the cd based manual for every year and model of BMW. I'm sure if you type BMW TIS in Ebay you'll find what you need.

If I get time later I'll see if I can find the tool number

Somebody on here did do a detailed writeup I on how to remove the external door handle using made up tools but I can't recall who it was

Thanks for you help guys, really appreciate it. I'll have a fiddle around with making a hooked tool and taking the handle off. I'll be buggered if I'm going to pay someone else a few hundred quid to do the same thing (and they'll probs scratch the door of something).

It looks fairly easy to remove, I've just got no idea what could be be broken.... Hayho!!!

Well I had a go at trying to remove the door handle today and without the proper tools it is almost impossible (I followed this thread without much success http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=10075 ) Does anyone know of any good BMW specialists near Richmond,Surrey?

Thanks
