Dont know what to do

In the continuing saga of my roof I've taken the roof off to replace the supposed broken motor.

This is what I found. It was well sealed but hanging down in the well not attached to the roof. It looks like it was replaced before. The fluid looks too low so I will top up.

I don't know what to do. Use new (2nd hand) motor or not?

Any advice as I'm stumped

As you say the motor looks quite new,I would top the oil up and try the motor on the floor with a battery.
 
So I replaced the motor as I thought I know it works or so the seller said and topped up the fluid till it was full and now I'm back to the 1/2 way up.... Then stops

Now it won't hold it's height just sinks back slow as well as only going 1/2 way

The hood does go back down very slowly when you release the button in that half way up position, so that's not something to be worried about.

I do that when I remove the centre storage area as it makes it easier.
 
Is this exactly how it was with the old motor ?

It seems to hit a definate point,then stop...... Maybe a microswitch is/isnt being tripped ?

The action doesnt look like its short of hydraulic power.fluid or air lock.



Have you tried manually pulling the roof past the point where it sticks?
 
Yes totally,

since my last post I've taken the roof off again and checked everything. No obvious hydraulic leaks, fluid is full. All wires are correct. There are no obvious signs of damage. I found 2 sensors that both looked like they were ok on the frame, passenger side by the ram. There are 2 other sensors somewhere in the front of the roof,

Does anyone know how toget the from trim panel off? The one above your head.
 
The motor looks and sounds to be working fine, the control unit must be cutting it out for some reason. Likely as above, because the control unit is not seeing a microswitch open or close that it expects.

Have you got any diagnostics such as INPA or DIS? This would allow you to see what is going on and drive the motor via the software.

Have you tried it with the ignition off after raising it a bit?
 
i found 2 of the sensors and they didn't look damaged or anything but they are just simple hall sensors.
there are another couple of sensors somewhere in the locking mechanism at the front of the roof but i couldn't figure out how to get the plastic cover off and i was running out of time.

i was considering the software any advice on which one?
 
Do you mean the plastic trim underneath the leading edge of the soft top? It's held on with the obvious torx screws you can see underneath with another one inside the removable central cover (which you remove to manually lock the roof) there is another screw each side of the roof which are just visible either above or below the roof frame as its lifted a few inches (you can just see the White plastic washers behind the screws)

Ah pants, it's the 2 side screws I missed, :)

I got all the others. There is Defo done sort of sensor in there im sure of it as I can see 2 wires that are from the ecu ;) last thing to check visually
 
In terms of software I use INPA and DIS.

Where abouts are you?

I have just had a quick look on my ///M and plugged the laptop in with INPA.

There is a page where you can read status but it does not tell you the status of any sensors like the hall effect ones by the look of it. I thought perhaps on the status page, it would show you the status of all sensors and inputs related to the roof.

Maybe DIS is better but I have not tried that.

There is an activation page where you can activate the motor 1 second at a time up or down.

As I said, I would be very surprised if it were the motor, it sounds and looks to be functioning perfectly. Something is stopping the motor, it must be the soft top control unit. Why would it stop the motor? I am not sure. Maybe it is not seeing a sensor somewhere in the mechanism provide an input when it expects. Maybe it is seeing an overload condition in terms of current draw from the motor and cuts the power because it thinks it is jammed.

Within convertible top module, there is a fault memory where faults are logged and stored to memory. I reckon that in there, you will have faults which would tell you what the issue is, including if it were a motor overload condition or a hall effect device not doing something it should.

Does the close button continue to flash the red light when the motor stops thus indicating a fault condition?
 
Yes the red light flashes constantly other than when it is in the locked open position.

I ordered one of the cables and software things so have a look with that in the week

Did you manage to repair the roof?? Mine is doing exactly the same and I replaced the entire roof loom (2 parts) that control the opening/closing.

You get to the hall sensors near the locking mechanism by peeling back the fabric and they're in the top comparment.

Just wondered, cos mine is being a real pain. I am just about to try a used CVM IV roof module.
