Does anyone have a SC with standard insurance, not fleet etc

Not being able to add a supercharger due to insurance is making me want to sell up and move on. I just want to check if there is anyone out there that has a supercharger, has told their insurance company and doesnt have some sort of trade or fleet insurance?

Otherwise, is there some trick i dont know about, like some other type of insurance i can get that wont cost the earth.

cheers.

It depends on the miles you do, if you can live with lower mileage (i.e. Below 7k), you can get good rates from a specialist such as REIS or CCI on their sports car policies.

Not the same I know but; REIS insured both my modified Exige S and my Elise, that was running a transplanted Honda engine with supercharger - the mods ran to about 3 sheets of a4 as I listed everything just in case. The supercharger added 10% to the premium but I could also keep adding power as adding engine power added that premium no matter what I did after the first increase.

I only run about 7k a year anyhow so that would be fine. I have tried about 10 or 15 different companies so far, dont remember if i have tried REIS or CCI yet thought, defiantly been on their site at some stage.

I know people haven't had problems in the past, but things seem to have changed recently, I have rung modified car specialist after modified car specialist and they all tell me the same thing. They either dont do SCs or they wont do it on an M. It's quite ridiculous really. I could get a nissan gtr that would still be faster and more expensive and they wouldn't have a problem insuring it for under 1k. I don't get their logic, adding a SC isnt going to get my car stolen, and its not going to make it more likely that I crash than if I was in a gtr.

Did not know 7k was such a cut off point, I do less then 5k per year but have a very restricted standard insurance for the M, but only pay £375 or so.

ditto again...

gonna go look my annual mileage up!

Hold on guys. This is for specialist policies. Both CCI and REIS offer bands of upto 3k, upto 5k, upto 7k, and above 7k (unlimited). These policies normally have to verify mileage eah year, not give a rough gestimate like with the mainstream guys, with the specialist policies if you go over your mialge limit you are not insured, you have to ring to upgrade your policy.

The benefit is you can actually speak to someone who understands your car properly and wants to help (it shocked me). For those that normally ring up with dread to add mods on normal ins companies it's quite a change to list off 6 pot brakes, harnesses, upgraded intercooler, 3 way coilovers and just get thanked for letting them know rather being asked to prepare the lube.

The downside is if you do big milage they struggle to compete with the big boys (on a standardish car at least).

Ring Mary at REIS and see if she can help, you don't know till you ask.

Reis gave me a terrible quote on their unlimited policy so restricted mileage is a must, my M is standard other than csl wheels and a strut brace and they quoted 2.5k! Needless to say I went elsewhere...good luck with the SC search

i have had my car nearly 2 years, i have only done 7000 miles so these specialist companies may well suit me

i may do 3000 this summer when i go round europe, even so my mileage will be less than 7k per annum

I've contacted REIS and CCI via email. No reply from CCI yet, might have to ring them. REIS said they may be able to help me if I am over 25 and have had the car for a bit. I'm 32 and have had the car for over a year. So I filled out their form and they replied with 'Unfortunately, as the vehicle is parked on the street we are unable to provide a quotation on this occasion'. Can someone explain to me why I need to garage my car if I add a supercharger? I'm sure they would insure a non SC that isn't garaged. Anyhow, I just happen to be looking for a new place with private parking, so still waiting on a price based on that.

Alan

They told me the same, and I live a couple of miles from where you are. Mine's on a drive but not a garage so they wouldn't quote me...

Hi Alan
On that postcode the vehicle either has to be garaged or in secure underground parking.
Kind Regards

I live in London N12 btw

Yea I think i'll ring both at lunch time today to get some real answers.

@markos, so I guess that's you in the black coupe I have spotted a few times in north london!

So I got quoted £2863.03.

The reasons were:
* High area rating - London postcode
* Driver Age - under 30
* Vehicle bhp - 330+
* Low level of No Claim Discount - 1 year

However I'm actually 32, he just got that wrong. I've never had an accident and have been driving for 15 years now. I have been on a garage insurance policy in Ireland so they wont accept that no claims. Think I'm fighting a loosing battle here.

There is a non-M version around my neck of the woods, but if it's an M and it's around Southgate, Wichmore Hill, Palmers Green or Enfield it's me! :D

Let me know if yours is a Roadster/Coupe and colour and I'll look out for you :thumbsup:

Ah a single year no claims will always make it hard. It does seem like your circumstances are against, you, it's harder enough when you do tick all the boxes

Strange he said about under 35, they've been insuring me on modified Grp20 cars since I was 26 (well in their previous setup before they split off in the last few years)
