I am not so sure there is anything to worry about? I ask a lot of daft questions all the time when I am buying things – nothing dodgy about it, it is conversation. The Renault? So what? I sometimes knock around in a dodgy 52 plate van? If I had made a comment about the suspension on a car I was buying and the person I was buying it off took it to BMW and had 20 hours worth of investigation work under warranty to come up with nothing I'd be pretty certain my fears of a problem were nothing to worry about. A small dent? It is a used car!

I feel that even if there is a chance of this being genuine, it's a bit like the question of would you bet £100K on heads or tales if you would get £1M if you called right. My answer is no as I can't afford to lose £100K. If the bet was £10 to win £100 then maybe as I'd like the £100 and can afford to lose the £10.
So with the alarm bells ringing and all I'd get is £20K for a £20K car that is an easy to sell asset - why take the risk.

This is the most clear cut scam I can ever imagine from what you have posted (well aside the Nigerian oil funds that need moving to the UK) and as other have pointed out re the use of stolen or forged bank drafts. Such people have to be plausible and almost set an element of conviction in you that they are genuine.
Your car would be on a container or in bits within a couple of days and 6 weeks later you'd be down a car and up £100.
I would not even mention his deposit and see what he has to say for himself. Bet he doesn't even want to come by to collect it.

almost definitely sounds like a scam to launder a dodgy bankers draft. Give the fuzz a ring and hide your car keys at night!
I agree, too much dodgy stuff going on. If I was interested in buying a car privately I would have no problem with the seller coming to my bank to watch me pull out funds to purchase the car. So long as he politely stood aside while I gave the bank account numbers and such.
go with your gut feelings on this,i would.its obvious that you really have doubts so stick with them and dont do it.if you have a safe at home put the keys and everything else in there,you know they will be secure then.if you do wanna give ya car away i will do the honours and have it.ha ha :wink: dont loose it as it would be such a shame

I actually got cash out ready for my car purchase, at the time I was looking for a 147 GTA and knew I'd have to travel far to get one, so to save trips I had the cash out and ready to go, I thought all buyers would be fine with this. However first GTA I went to see the guy said he wouldnt take cash, and then the Z4 came up and I went with cash too - he also refused to take cash and made me go the next day with him to pay it in to his bank.
He was a policemen too. Fair enough, I guess when dealing with such money no deal can be done on the spot anymore, its best both parties go to the bank to get things done and veryified. I barely slept that night!
