Do lowered springs need adjustable rear camber arms?

Hi all

I've fitted Eibachs recently meaning around a 20mm drop from my previous M sport springs. I took the car in to be aligned today and here was the initial diagnosis >

I am being told I need front wishbone bushes - on looking at the they look pretty good, some minor wear but certainly not falling apart or badly perished. Also they said I need to get adjustable rear camber arms to correct the negative camber as the standard arms have no adjustment left. Im asking the question as many of you guys have Eibachs - did you need adjustable camber arms? I've not heard it mentioned for non track day cars before....?

Any advice here appreciated

The thing is it's not actually that low >

I lowered mine on FK Springs ..which IIRC are the lowest drop..on my 3.0si and my wheels alignment was adjusted ok and is spot on according to the printout..so shouldn't think you need adjustable arms..

Yes you should be at least 10mm lower and your camber should be worse than mine!

I'm wondering if the specs they put in the hunter kit were right as they put my car down as an ///M because it's lowered. I've read that the ///M has less camber in factory set up than the regular Z. So in theory it would read worse than it actually is.

Do you happen to recall what your rear camber is?

I think they put the wrong settings in yours mate. Mine just says roadster at the top.

Might be worth calling to ask whether this is the case?

Yeh, it's worrying that I'm told I need adjustable rear camber arms when after lengthy research rear camber on the regular 3.0 with sports suspension as per BMW TIS specs is 2.50 +/- 15. Which means mine is not exactly miles out!

Mmmm......

Cheers Ben

For what it's worth, my cars feeling a lot more planted and less ''wishy washy'' after they done the alignment and bushes. Get a lot more feedback through the wheel which is nice.

Could just be a misunderstanding? I'm sure they'll put it right if so.

Thanks both, I think after a lot of reading, and your help I'm nearly there with this issue

I've seem a lot of people getting the non ///M cars aligned using ///M alignment specs which are quite different ie normal rear camber 1.6-2.1 for ///M vs 2.5 +/- 15 for the standard car.

I'm not saying this would necessarily cause any issues in use, just that unless these alignment centres input the correct car the "current" readings they give prior to adjustment can be nonsense.

Cheers

You should be able to get OEM geometry with the Eibach kit fitted. I also had the same concerns but the garage had no issue setting the geometry up on a hunter.

Just looking at the first picture it's saying its for the M roadster is black bold writing so have they put the wrong details in the alignment computer

Here's mine, think they run out of adjustment so just made sure the matched, mine on H&Rs, had new control arms and drop links so the front was well out.

Jan, thanks for posting that - they managed to find a lot of adjustment in those rears without you having adjustable rear camber arms. They look very decent "after" readings. Ignore the red on the rear camber, standard cars OEM camber is 2.5 so yours is perfect!

PM me the garage name mate, I may consider a trip over to Kent if I can't get this sorted locally

It was f1 auto centre in maidstone, took them about two hours but the car feels great now. Even asked if I could bring in backwithin a week for them to recheck and make any adjustments as it was so fair out.

Curious if they added weight to trunk/boot as required by the TIS. Just had mine done by BMW and observed that they had jugs filled with water added to the trunk as per the TIS. Without the weight in the rear the alignment is going to be off....

Yes true, they didn't put any weight in my car, again another grey area as I've read that some garages claim that the system compensates for that.....probably complete BS of course. There's a lot of inconsistency in this area it's fair to say

I had this problem this week.
They said they could get the toe correct and the camber in spec.

They adjusted the eccentric nut on the hub end of the control arm. Is that the only adjustment available?

Thanks.

Andy

Yes you'll end up needing the camber adjustment arms in the back. When you lower the E85 you probably end up with -2.5' camber on the rear on the end of the excentric bolt range. But even driving on track hard, the car has so little roll, it isn't using the whole tire width.
