DIY - Removing OEM Chrome/Fitting Black High Gloss Grilles

I have just finished fitting the Black High Gloss Grilles on my 23i M Sport before dark (picture will follow in the morning). After reading some instructions on Z89 ZPost, I followed the hard way (also the only way for me without special BMW tools - I think), which is not suitable/possible for person with the muscular/fat forearms (diameter >11 inch). Also, method of removing grill on E85/E89 does not work on E89. You will break the bumper and grill.

There are 8 chips in total, 3 on the top, 1 on each side, and 3 at the bottom. I opend the bonnet and removed the 4 bolts on the front air duct, and removed it from the air filter box. It was quite hard to detach the air duct from the air filter box. Then I could put my arm through the gap between the bumper and radiator to get access to the back of the grill (do not attempt if you have large forearms). It was then easy to press the clip with the finger tip and remove 6 clips (3 on top, 2 on sides, and 1 at the bottom near far side). The remaining 2 clips were difficult to remove with finger, as there was a horizontal bar right behind the grill. The gap was very small. I worked so hard to get my finger through to get the 2 clips released on the right grill, but not the left one. So I used this

to remove the remaing 2 clips on the left grill.

Then both OEM grilles were removed, I checked for any damage and simply put the new grilles in place, and put the air duct back on. Job done.

After I removed the grill from the bumper, I now know how the grill fits into the bumper. So if I have to remove them again in the future, I can probably do it without opening the bonnet. Or I just pay 10-minute labour and get dealer to do it for me.

I just tried to install my new grilles and ran into same problem, i stuck my fingers in the grilles from the outside with no luck then when i opened the hood, surprise surprise, i saw the large air intake cover, im not sure what type of tool is needed to take that off but i def dont have it laying around.

How would you do it without opening the air intake cover?

I even had a issue trying to seperate the grill into two pices, i was thinking of just putting the black into the silver frame but wasnt sure...

You just need a socket to undo the 4 bolts on top of the air intake cover. But it is quite hard to disconnect it from the channel to the air filter box.

I don't think you can separate the grille into 2 pieces (you may break it).

Having bought the black grilles back in April to go with my 'black & white' theme and not wanting to pay my local stealers fast approaching £150 - I woke up this morning determined to have another go at fitting them. (I had already tried when I first bought them thinking it would be a simple job!)

So as ksher detailed above I removed the air duct above the front bumper and with the new grilles as a guide set about trying to unclip the old chrome grilles - again it flummoxed me for a few minutes then with a flat bladed screwdriver pushed between the grille and bumper I managed to unclip my first clip - I then used this method to complete the rest of the clips (I also do not have the smallest arms so at times it was difficult to get the screwdriver in the right position). I eventually got the first grille out and then the second was really easy having access via the hole the first grille was in.

So two results - fitted grilles and £150 saving!

I now have a set of chrome/black E89 grilles that I will post later

Looks really good on your white Z4, still deciding if I want to go with the stealth look with these on our Black Sapphire Z4?

I had mine done - really like it. Still not got round to a good photo session, but here is a link to one that has the look.

I was initially mortified when I saw it, as as it is only the 3rd other car I have seen with the same colour combination as mine (Pure impulse design interior with sapphire black). Plus he has the 35is to my lowly 20i!

Looks much meaner.

You can change these easily, put some tape on a wide flat blade screwdriver and prise them off from the top corner first job done in less than 2 mins.
