DIY oil change

Going to do my first DIY oil change (intermim) on the car this weekend. I have read the how to guide. Is the M very different re. the filter or the torque values? Any help appreciated as I am a mechanical idiot

Very easy, the filter uses a normal six sided socket to undo the bolt on the top of the canister. Just be sure to replace all the rubber seals and note the direction the old filter came out - lubricating the seals with a dab of fresh oil can make them slide easier when refitting. I didn't use a torque wrench when doing up the filter housing, just nipped it up snugly with a small ratchet.

I use an oil suction pump (PELA 6.5 litre) and drag the oil out of the dipstick tube and oil canister for my intermediate oil changes, very neat and tidy and saves jacking up and crawling under the car.

Should be the same mate don't worry about it.. Dunno about yours but the M54's filter housing shows the tightening torque on it!

A little tip for you which you may find helpful... As the sump plug is placed sideways, use a LARGE bowl to prevent spillage as it flies out at an alarming rate sideways. Also, if you leave the oil cap and filter sealed when you undo the sump plug, the air vacuum will give you enough time to pull you hand out of the way of the 80C hot oil. Then undo the cap and filter :)

i have never used a torque rench when doing an oil change, infact i can only ever recall using 1 when doing a cylinder head

never changed oil on a zed though

pikey :P

being serious just for a moment hehe, do people seriously use torque renches???????

well i must do it wrong :?

i've not done much proper maintenance for some time, but i've never stripped a thread and i don't ever recall anything ever coming loose

i tend to tighten from my gut feeling, depends on the job, if i thought it important i would checks things after driving for a few miles or so

S54 engine on Z4M has a vertical sump plug. N52 engine on Z4 has horizontal (sideways) plug.
