DIY carbon air intake

Afternoon all, thought I would share a little project I’ve been fannying around with! I used to have a GruppeM intake on my E36 325i and loved that induction roar. I’ve done the sound generator mod, but it wasn’t quite the same, so thought I’d have a go at making one. I’ve done a bit of carbon overlaying of parts before and it was good fun. Never tried fibreglassing, but it seemed like fun too! Plus I’m too tight to pay £900 for the real thing

Watched endless youtube videos and scoured the net for information - including a post on a clio forum where a guy had simply stuck an induction kit inside a flower pot… I didn’t use that idea.

I used high density foam to craft a rough shape, covered it with release tape and then pva release agent. Layer of fibreglass tissue, 2 layers of strand matting, then another layer of tissue. Layered carbon fibre matting over the top, a few coats of epoxy resin and then polished up a little. A little rough around the edges, but I’m fairly happy with the result.

I’ve nicknamed it ‘Group Y’ - the obvious questions being ‘Y would you bother?’ and ‘Y didn’t you just buy one?’… the answer being, as previously mentioned, I’m too tight :D

Does give a lovely roar when out for a spirited drive. Performance-wise, no idea. Just a bit of fun really, thanks for looking

A rough test of how it would go together

Mate, that's a fantastic outcome  . I'd be pretty upset if I paid £900 for something you've replicated and fabricated for peanuts in your home garage. Kudos to you and your skills, it looks great

Thanks, it is a little rough around the edges but happy overall :D

Looks really PRO.

Did you have chance to check how this shield affect temperature decrease for air intake ?
And used any additional heat protection foil ?

has it made any difference to the performance and the engine sound?

Hard to say, I’ve never had the car dyno’d to start but the ‘bum-dyno’ feels like it’s a little quicker to pick up, moving through the revs. Could just be psychological though

IMO it’s got a nice sound. I have a couple of little phone clips, which I’ll post up in a bit…

Nothing more scientific than having a feel of the intake after going out for a blast. It doesn’t seem to have adversely affected anything, which I took as a bonus!

I used 90mm aquatic pressure pipe to connect the filter to MAF section, so covered that with aluminium heat tape. I may cover the engine side of the intake in the same tape, to help with heat reduction too.

Try these. Not sure what the irritating rattle is, but couldn’t hear it at the time. Think it might be the phone holder
