Following on from my earlier post re by 2.0 07 Z4 and the cat conv and the unbelievable estimate from BMW to replace the cat, sensors, wiring loom etc- £3,600-thank you all for your helpful information.
Without wishing to be boring do any members have comments on the fact that the the "exhaust emission values" light has come on about 4 times but with 1500-2500 miles between each occurrence. Do you think this points to a problem other than the car such as sensors??
Obviously I am desperately seeking comfort not to have to replace the cat. As the fault light has been reset my indy cannot check to see if
he can isolate the problem until it comes on again. The car passed the MOT emissions test 6 weeks previously with no problems.

For members info BMW sent me an e-mail saying " manifolds are made to order and can take up to 12 weeks to complete, however BMW do supply you with a vehicle for the period of time that the part is on back order (being made)" also they followed this with a further e-mail asking what I wanted to do. Very efficient and pro active or very much looking for business...
 
Joking...aren't the 2.0 ltr engines the same for other BMW cars? 12 weeks to supply a manifold is piss poor at best and when discussing that price tag with you the next words should of been "good will gesture".

Can you not get a second hand one?

If its any help, I have a pair of cat manifolds from a 2.2 6 cylinder with all the sensors, I know the cats will be no good but the sensors might.....never had any fault codes so you are more that welcome to try them if they are the same part numbers to eliminate that.

Really?? A BMW Dealer diagnoses a faulty cat and quotes you £3600 to "fix" and says that the fault might return in the future? Doesnt install much confidence in them or the parts.

Choose another repair route I think!

I think that this tells you all you need to know. I would suggest that if you are getting between 1500-2500 mile intervals between this light coming on then clealy there's not much of a problem. Why don't you buy yourself a D900 OBD11 code reader? A mere £20 from eBay.
 
That seems a little pricey?

I had an estimate for a new cat only two/three weeks ago - all parts, including labour came to £1k.

I had this last winter. Changed from supermarket fuel, ran through some injector cleaner and took the zed for a couple of good old fashioned italian tune ups. Light went out after several cycles and now I'm using Shell fuel it's never come back on. I make sure it gets a good blast at the red line every now and then (at least once a week) rather than just pootling all the time.
It's stayed out all summer so we''ll see what happens when it gets colder.......
