Disabled use Z4?

Hi all,

After being badly injured in an RTC in March I am now permanently wheelchair bound. Just wondered if there are other Z4 owners who are similarly disabled? I'm loathe to get rid of my Z4 but as it's a manual I was looking at the possibility of selling mine to buy an auto and have that converted to hand control.

Genuinely tragic news that mate i do know that a auto Z4 can make a perfect to be controlled by hand once converted , there is a forum member who has the very same set up who i'm sure would be happy to talk you through the ins & outs .

Yes it is , he bought my Z4 E86 auto 4 yrs back & to the best of my knowledge is still enjoying it

I have to say that my Z4 is the only car I've ever really connected with. My son and I have spent many happy hours together in my garage working on the car, polishing, repairing, modifying and servicing it. Which is why I'm so loathe to sell it, as I've become invested in it so much.

Really sorry to here about your accident. As an alternative to selling yours disabled adaptions vehicle specialists offer automated clutch systems that can be retro fitted. Im not sure if theyre compatible with the zed specifically but if your particularly attached to your current zed and the cost isn't horrendous maybe this could be an option to keep your current car if you wish.

Sorry to hear of your accident, I do know of a company who can retrofit an auto-clutch which you could then combine with hand controls for the brake and throttle?
I'll pm you some extra details in case it's of any help

It's definitely doable - my auto coupe was converted earlier in its lifetime for a previous owner with a disability.
When purchasing I was told by the previous owner that it had belonged to someone who got injured whilst serving in the armed forces but loved it too much to sell.

Hope you find a solution to keep enjoying z4 motoring.

Really sorry to learn about your accident. But I 'm sure you will be able to enjoy your pride & joy again (if not, with another automatic Z4)!

Actually the guy running the small independant garage where I bought my coupe was in a wheel chair after a bike accident disabling him from using his legs. I was at first really surprised when he showed his technique to drive automatic cars: he was using a sort of double stick (shaped as a long "U") that he put in a sling around the steering shaft. With one tip on the brake pedal, and the other on the accelerator he was controlling the acceleration and braking in a very natural manner. Of course this was not ideal as he had only one free hand to steer the car.
It was however remarkable and very impressive to see someone with his disability sticking to his will to drive, and even deciding to make a business of selling cars.
He told me he loved the feeling of driving the Z4 and confessed he put a few hundred miles on it before really deciding to put it on sale.

I understand this might not be a real solution here, but just thought of sharing this here.

Will an E85 boot fit a wheelchair? Not the usual question asked when looking at a Z4, and I guess it was probably one of the first questions you addressed.
Good luck with whatever solution you come up with - it will be great to stay with a Zed if you can

Actually haven't tried it for space in the boot yet, was thinking more of putting it into the front passenger seat! I know, a bit selfish :lol:

Sorry to hear it's so expensive. However on a more positive note I can confirm a wheel chair will fit in a e85 boot. Did this myself yesterday when I took my aunt to a hospital appointment. I was quite surprised if fitted to be honest but it did, just.

Not selfish at all - of course I hadn't thought exactly how you're supposed to get to it in the boot if you're flying solo. Just assumed you'd be taking a passenger to do the fetching and carrying while you just enjoyed the driving :wink:

I had a knee replacement last year and although I have no problem with pedals, heaving up out of the seat at the end of a day's driving can tax the joints. Hope that you find a solution that works for you.

Very good point, I have tried it and I have to say that it's a heck of a lot easier than trying to get into my X3!
