im not one to trust computers and so not keen to wait for the oil light to flash up when the level is too low

Looking at the z4 manual is illustrates a different dip stick to one my car has - I've taken a picture which is shown below and drawn what i think is the min and max - could someone confirm this is correct?

good idea to check it regularly, iirc the light on the dash indicates oil pressure, not oil level - in which case your warning light might come quite a while after you're past the 'min' mark... (tbh, this was on my 1988 ford escort, dunno about the Z4! might be completely wrong but I've always checked my oil level regularly since!)

Dev - according to the handbook if the oil warning lamp is red then you are right - low oil pressure.

. If it lights up yellow when you are driving then minimum oil level and top up (tells you not to go for more than 30 miles).
. If it lights up yellow when you switch of the engine then oil top up required. And....
. If the warning lamp lights up in yellow within 20 seconds after the engine is started the oil level sensor is defective.

Not sure how it does all this though....

Different set-up again on the Coupe, and I couldn`t believe it when I looked at mine, as it`s the FIRST car I`ve ever owned that didn`t have a dipstick at all ! :?
