dinan suspension, resale value

 i'm from the bay (california)
i was curious, im planning on investing on a new suspension system because it's just about that time, anyways. after 6 or so years, i feel like there is a need to replace certain things so that i don't end up fuxking myself up in the end [somehow].. but anyways..

if i put on a new set of dinan springs and shocks, and all those other goodies, i believe they call it the stage 3 suspension system http://www.dinancars.com/store/product.php?productid=1298&cat=388&page=1, in the end, i am going to end up paying about maybe 4 to 5 grand for a quality job from a reputable shop.

so... if i put them on, will the resale value drop as a result of this? cuz i don't want that!

but, i also want/need (want comes first) a new system. i have already invested in a new clutch actuator (shifts like brand new), new brakes/rotors, oil changes to the TEE, and maintanence on a regular schedule.

be real, folks! :D

In the UK its very rare for extras to add any real value to a vehicle on resale but depending on what they are can reduce the resale value (bad fit body kits etc). If the parts you have fitted maintain or improve on the original suspension fit then I can't see they should cause you a problem but should ensure that you get the best 'market' price for the age of the vehicle. Many people buying such a car will know that upgrades like the Dinan supension fit are a significant improvement over the original and this should assist in resale whenever you decide to do it.

I think that accessories/modifications are lost money when it comes to resell value. Depending on what is added it may make the car easier to sell, but not do all that much to the value.

Something like after market suspension would probably scare away some buyers as they won't want to deal with finding specialist insurance to cover modifications. At least that is the case in the UK, I don't know how American insurance works when it come to modifications.

As Alan said if you can find the right buyer then you shouldn't have any trouble selling.

You can always consider keeping the old suspension and swapping it back when it comes to selling the car. You can then sell your Dinan suspension separately.

Echo the comments of the above guys , but would probably be even more harsh.

I think however good a suspension upgrade would lower the resal value Vs a stock untouched example. The exception may be for a very small niche market who value it and so perhaps buy it quicker, but expect to pay no more.

Any mod like this has to be considered as lost money, done for the benefit while owned and you should swap out to the original on sale and sell the suspension on (as we've seen people do on here)

so sticking to oem parts would be better in the long haul, aye? I suppose I can live with that, only because I know that my oem parts are legit, tried and proven.

If I do decide to get an aftermarket setup, I'll keep my parts, but I'm gonna hate having to pay to put them back on if I decide to trade it in for a z4m. But that's quite a few years down the line. I think I'll stick to oem, but I would love a dinan setup.

Fuxking choices, man.

As for insurance, I'd prolly not even mention it to them. I'll be happy with oem parts if some shite ever occurred.

Check the used BMW market online in the US and specifically those with Dinan as a keyword . Some of those Packages are $25000 all in so they are of value. I would expect to use the DInan upgrades as both a selling feature and to keep the car in the top edge of the price bracket.

That's not the point. In the UK if you're involved in an accident and uprated / performance parts are fitted that are not declared then the insurer has the right to not pay out. It's not a case of just accepting oem replacement. They're very hot on anything that makes it a better target to steal, increases performance or perceived performance and risk. So if you fit Dinan it's to go faster not carry groceries home more safely

Don't get me wrong - I think the idea of Dinan is great but there's more to this than just putting $$$'s on the car and expecting to get some of it back and no other effects

CJ is absolutely right - in UK I discovered you'll even have to declare changing from RFT to non-RFT to the insurers as it is seen as "change in performance". Thankfully, it seems most insurers are ok with the change as it is often seen as down grade :o but I bet you any money if you need insurance payout and haven't declared it they'll refuse to pay (or demand a hefty reduction in value). Given BMW reduces part ex value if you haven't got OEM tires, we have little come back.

And that's just changing tire to non RFT!

cj10jeeper, RX-78,

thanks... i called my insurance company, they said it would be an extra 9 dollars a month to cover the entire setup. :)

i asked if they would replace my car with oem parts if i went ahead and didn't get coverage for the dinan stuff and they said they'd cover it, but only replace it with oem parts. i'd lose out on my dinan stuff. but whatever....

i'm getting closer & closer to my dinan setup... sweeet.

thanks for the input, fellas. i really appreciate!

Wow $9/month only? Thats really good. if only we had similar kinda insurance in uk we'll all be modding our cars :(

Well that's good to know it's just $9/mth and a lot better than finding out in 6 months time that you've a total uninsured loss on your hands when something untoward happens.
