Ok, so I’m researching a lsd conversion at the moment, poss a final drive ratio change.
E85 z’s. Have the 188k differential, and of course you can get lsd’s for these, but their a bit on the pricy side.

Question being, will internals from a 188mm diff directly fit the 188k diff?

188mm diffs are a lot easier to pick up on the used side.
 
I got a spare stock diff for cheap from a breaker and stuck a Quaife in my original. What exactly are you trying to do, fit a cheaper LSD?
 
Exactly that, dont much fancy parting with £800 or so just for a bit of sideways fun.
Though I would like the sideways fun
 
This is the first thing I wanted to do to the Z4 when I bought it, but eventually gave up due to parts availability / cost. I had a quaife in my 335i but fancy a clutch type LSD this time around. I think the ideal final drive for me would be a 3.46. What route are you thinking of going down yourself?
 
How much cheaper are the others? Honestly, it is the best mod you can do to the car IMHO - literally transforms it. If you track it then the £800 or so is well worth it, if not then I don't often notice on the public road.
 
Was looking at a clutch type from an e36, though I’ve just realised it was from an e36M, so different diff entirely. Thought I may had found a bargain at a couple of hundred quid. Others do seem to be similarly priced.
Not looking to really track the car (maybe for a bit of fun), it’s only a 2.2, just thought a higher ratio, would give me a bit more oomph from the go, and the lsd for sideways stuff.
Still though, it would be handy to find out if the internals are interchangeable between the 188k, and 188mm as it may open up some more options later down the line.
