Hi everyone,

Does anyone know and can recommend the correct differential oil? Car is a 2003 E85 3.0i SMG if that makes any difference??

Also, whilst my differential is out, what do you guys recommend replacing on it? Which seals? It has a mist of oil around the casing but can't really trace where it's coming from...

What are you taking it out for?
The oil can be changed with it still installed AFAIK.

If you have it out it might be worth doing the three shaft seals and giving it a lick of paint.

Replacing a few bushes and took the diff out...

I'll have a look into the shaft seals👍

Do you need to replace the locking rings/clips on the ends of the driveshaft? Don't want the driveshafts popping out while driving lol
 
Ah ok, that makes sense.

Normally the hogrings on the end of the driveshafts don't need replacing unless they were somehow damaged when removed. :thumbsup:
 
Check for play in the output shafts

JC Racing can sort it put if required
 
I'd suggest Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W90

By coincidence, I did a rear diff fluid change on my E46 330Ci yesterday with the stuff.
(Sorry about the stickers stuck over the bottle)

Do you know if that stuff is lifetime fluid?

The original BMW diff fluid is lifetime, if I'm correct...
Don't know much about the viscosity numbers etc...

No lubricant manufacturer is mad enough to market their products as lifetime service!

BMW fill their boxes and diffs and rate the oil for the lifetime of the warranty, not the lifetime of the car. There is nothing special about that oil. It still needs changing at a sensible interval if one wants long service from the gearbox and diff (past the manufacturers warranty).
