Difference in the handling between roadster + coupe?

Almost impossible to compare really, the coupe drivers will always cling to the fact that their car is more 'focussed' and therefore faster than the roadster otherwise, why have one and miss out on the best reason to own a Z4? :poke:

The much vaunted Cayman S was slower around the Top Gear track than the Z4MR, if not by much.

I'm a driving god and know the coupe is better*

*for keeping the sun off my delicate skin that is

Having owned both the Z4MC and now a Z4MR I hope that I can be neutral in this debate.

I go to the ring as often as possible and when I bought the Z4MR I was expecting the handling to be not as ridgid as the Z4MC just because i think that is the general perseption. The Z4MR I personnaly felt was with out shadow of a dout just as poised and focused as the Z4MC.
I do have to admit that the set up on both cars is the same except this time I have Pilot Sport Cups fitted as unlike the PS2 Sports i had on the Coupe. The cups are astonishing at the grip they give but I do feel that both cars are near identical in the handling.
I know that people will never agree on this debate but from my experience in being a regular track user the cars are near as dam it the same. In fact I bought some Eiback springs for my Z4MC and never got round to fitting them and afetr spending a week at the ring last week i am not going to fit to the Z4MR as feel it would benifit. I am of course only gauging this on my trips to the ring which is off course longer and faster and not the tipical tight UK track circut.

Anyway happy debate????

Regards

I've had both Roadster (not Z4MR though) and now Coupe. Reason I had a coupe this time is looks and rarity. In my opinion (and it is just only down to opinion) the E85 Roadster is starting to look its age. That had a big bearing on my decision. The Coupe is a 4 year old car, the E85 is now 7 years old.

To be honest you'd be hard push to tell the difference in handling in terms of setup, especially given the roadster actually weighs about 30kgs less.

The Coupe is 10KG heavier. The M3 CSL shaved 110KG off the weight of the E46 M3, and that buys it buy 27 seconds for a lap of the Nurburgring (circa 2 seconds a mile). I think it's clear that 10KG of extra weight - equivalent to, say, a pair of trainers and a hearty lunch - is pretty much irrelevant...

:)

Just to clarify the 'stiffness' issue....the Roadster scores 14,500Nm/degree but the Coupe posts a figure of 32,000 Nm/degree. Which is stiffer than, say, a Pagani Zonda (27,000 Nm/degree). But like the weight difference, it's pretty meaningless in the real world, just useful when playing Top Trumps. If you drive both cars back to back, the difference is you can see the sky while driving one of them, and the other is very, very pretty....

I don't, I bet more like 2 seconds.

Use to have a Cayman S and Boxster S, no one ever moaned the Boxster was wobbley before the Cayman came along, but it was easy to tell the difference in stiffness, after driving/owning both I'd never have a softtop again, unless it was a 430 spyder of course

My seven is a soft top (or more accurately a no-top) and that definitely makes my ///M Coupe feel ever so slightly wobbley in the bends :D :poke:

So that's settled then, the roadster is faster but looks old and the coupe is stiffer and looks younger :D

You’re obviously not perceptive enough to perceive the difference :poke:

I always thought the Z4MC was to stiff, but after a few laps of the ring I wanted much more control from the suspension, the body seemed to lurch a bit to much. Firmer suspension and chassic would definatley help the lack of connection to the road I felt, I'd pity my teeth and spine for the rest of the time. :D
