Difference between the 2006-8 BMW Z4 Coupe

Hi All

Just want to say this forum is great and I'm learning a lot.

I'm interested in buying a Z4 coupe 2006 plate and I'm interested in finding out what were the changes, if any, BMW made between the 2006 to 2007 model and 2007-2008 models.

Is there much difference current value wise between the years if they are same condition etc?

Hopefully somebody can shed some light on it

Many thanks!

Only major difference was the N52 engine was revised (known as N52K) which has a black rather than a silver engine cover. Improved in several areas but same power and drives much the same. Head unit also has aux in from 2007 but it's an easy retrofit anyway. Not many people know about the N52K so doesn't seem to attract much of a premium.

Whole thread on it here, I certainly learned a lot reading it: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=105709&p=1555375&hilit=N52k#p1555375 (page 4 focuses on the N52K differences)

Didn’t know there were 2 variants myself . I guess as they are minor then must be reliability or LCI updates.

Will read with interest. Thanks Marlon

I’m surprised the power remained the same after the valve stem diameter was increased, as reducing this in size is an acknowledged step to take when porting a head for increased performance?

Hi and welcome OP.

This recent thread may be of interest - it includes the details of the differences between the early N52 engines and the revised N52k version:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=110623

It seems to have been implemented in September 2006.

My 1st Coupe had the N52k as it was built in October 2006 but my current one has the standard N52 as it was built in August 2006 - but there really is no difference in how they drive.

And it looks like there was another revision later with ISOfix passenger seat mounts and the option to disable the passenger air-bag - if that would be a feature you might use.

Good luck finding the right one, and don't forget we like photos!

I suspect the torque curve is slightly different in the mid range. Do wonder why it was done as I've never heard of any cam train problems on the original N52. Likewise with the con rods - never heard about a failure there either. The lightened camshaft should make it a bit more responsive in theory.

I’m surprised to hear about the cams as well, as far as I remember the first n52 engines also had hollow, hydroformed cams also? I remember reading about them in the brochure :?
