Difference between NAV DVD 06-2 and 09-1 ???

Hi All,

Me again, I've upgraded to BMW NAV DVD 09-1, there appears to be no difference from 06-2. Is there any difference? if not I'm glad I got it for free with my motor and didn't pay for it...

Also, upon reading about the cr@p postcode issue (I can never find an address sucessfully) there appears to be a custom/OEM NAV DVD available that uses POI for 7 digit postcodes - where would I obtain one of these - I've tried the usual places (fleabay etc) and have drawn a blank :headbang:

And last but not least do Navteq do a DVD with 7 digit postcode that is ccompatible with the BMW Pro Nav system that is not the BMW DVD?

Sorry for all the questions,

Thanks,

Soj

There will be mapping differences between the two DVDs, not necessarily easily noticable ones though as it does cover a wide area.

The only difference in mapping between the 2 will be updated road layouts. If there is nothing near to you then it would make little difference. In my case the entire motorway network has changed with the introduction of the M6T and rerouting of the A5.
The databases of POI, hotels, petrol, etc. will have changed greatly.

Never heard of an OEM 7 digfit postcode map and I can't comment (or mods allow) any discussion on the forum that could head towards any sort of infringment or non authorised BMW DVD's

Non OEM disks are known to freeze the satnav so would not recommend using them. The post code search on non OEM versions is absolute rubbish anyway as you have to search through POI lists (rather then the normal Citry/PC entry).

The disk you have is the best one to use. The changes I have seen are for example the whole new road layout near Coulsdon (South London) to the M23 which is not on the 2006 disk but will be on the 2009.

Thanks for your replies. I have tried to use the sat nav to get to two locations yesterday, the postcodes weren't recognised therefore rendering an expensive sat-nav unit useless - my nokia E90 has a better GPS than the BMW - why did they make it so useless?

It's a topic covered many times before and in reality you're trading integration (screen, dashboard display, voice commands, etc. against portability and in some cases better mapping)

OEM has many advantages such as it continues to work without GPS using the ABS sensors to continue tracking, no trailing wires, security risk and so on, but I agree it's too expensive as an option and maps and technology dates quickly.

My blackberry is an easy match for it on pure mapping functionality, but each to their own

I always use google maps now to find my destination and then the 'send to car' option if you're registered for BMW assist. Much better than fiddling with the nav to try and enter a destination, as all you have to do in the car is select 'retreive'

Sounds great, I've got no blutooth module though :( plus I have a blackberry which I use for work (nokia E90 is personal contract) which I hear also has issues even if I did have BT...

Ive never had a problem with the 5 digit - in reality it gets you very close so all you need to be sure is a road name too.

If I'm absolutely struggling I just google the 7 digit postcode on my phone and it gives me the road name anyway - hey presto.

I had a non OEM disc with cameras on it and the nav unit would freeze after a couple of hours. Never happens with the BMW disc. So I'd be careful of using anything non OEM.
