Did i really just get 30.4 mpg?

Having averaged about 22mpg over the weekend i reset one of the computer counters for my first commute in the Z.

I do about 25 miles of rural/semi-rural a-roads, and it was raining and i was early so i couldn't be arsed with overtaking today. I just drove normally, booted it once in third but the rest of the time at low revs/high gears between 30 and 70 mph. It's pretty free-flowing most of the way.

After a couple of miles from cold the avg was about 16, but by the time i'd got there it was 30.

Is the computer lying to me?

I only ever get over 30mpg if I sit at below 80mph (indicated) on the motorway for any length of time.

My overall average is about 26mpg, which includes everything from 200 mile motorway commutes to going to the supermarket and trundling around city centres.

But the ///M is not about fuel-saving anyway.

My experience is exactly the same as mmm-five's. I have to work quite hard at being restrained to see 30mpg.

I'm averaging 34mpg so far, although that's only based on 3 tankfuls (Shell V-Power)
I do tend to use cruise a lot though, and have very little inner-city (or motorway) driving

34 based on fuel used to fill the tank, the OBC usually ends up on 33.2 or 33.6

Just bear in mind the OBC is most definately optimisic when it comes to MPG - mine tends to be anywhere between 1-3mpg over-reading compared to working it out manually. That's resetting it everytime I refuel though.

I've managed 34 MPG indicated after a very restful early morning run from Liverpool to Stow on the Wold. Usually manage 30ish on motorways if I stick below 80 and don't press the loud pedal too often. Not what the cars about really but sort of nice when your not in a hurry to see 30ish from the 'M'

Big time - & even then anything above 15% throttle drops it like a stone.

You really can't compare the 3.0si Engine, it's not just "exactly the same minus 5mpg" or whatever..

Check out my Range After A Fill thread - this is my favourite way of judging economy as it's based on more than the last tankful iirc.. After a day at Bedford my range was about 180m, if I'm being exceptionally well behaved the most I've seen is just north of 320m.

Stretched the Ms legs this weekend with a trip to Spa, averaged 24.9 over 450 odd miles.

23.3 is my average over 37K

I usually manage only 18-19 mpg in London traffic, but I managed to average 25 mpg over 1500 miles in France last week, despite ascending many thousands of feet into the Alps and absolutely revving the nuts off the car through the mountain tunnels on the way home :D

Can`t quite believe these cars, to be honest !

Mine is "only" the 3.0si, but on my regular 22 mile trip into work today, it returned 39.4mpg, according to the OBC ! Okay, I know OBC`s are notorious for reading on the optimistic side, should we say, but it can`t be THAT far out, surely ?

As a comparison, the Alfa GT 3.2 V6 (which are 240bhp) that I part-ex`d last Friday for my Z4 was only showing 29mpg (yes, a whole 10mpg less) for the same journey, in the same sort of traffic conditions and speeds, so if the OBC`s on both vehicles are there, or thereabouts, then the straight six in the Zed is one heck of an efficient lesson in engineering !! 8)

i have had my car over 12 months, the figures so far:

fuel used - 900.87 litres = 198.17 gallons
mileage - 5542 miles
therefor = 27.97 mpg

thats calculated, not off the car trip computer

edit: these figures don't include the 200+ miles left in the tank
